Batwoman is more a patchwork of influences than a series with its own identity, but a late twist suggests it might yet find its feet.

It's a unique offering that has so much more to say than its trailers suggested and, with a little room to grow, all that potential could carry it to greatness.

It's not as good as like Arrow and Flash pilots, but it's a solid pilot. It's not bad, I wouldn't even say it's average, I'd say it's fairly solid.

In the long run, I'm concerned Batwoman won't have enough unique elements to make for compelling TV week in and week out, but this was a decent start.

Batwoman's second episode doesn't do much to fix the issues that emerged in the pilot, but its willingness to throw caution to the wind with plot feels in line with the other Arrowverse shows. I'm still not hooked, but I'll stick around for more.

The action scenes were suitably pacy, though hardly revolutionary, while Dougray Scott does a persuasive line in fascistic authoritarianism. The jury's still out on Rose's Batwoman, but she looks capable of springing a few surprises.

It will take a few more episodes for Batwoman to truly take flight - and she's yet to find the definitive look promised in the promo shots - but for now she's just fine to hang out with.

Batwoman hits all the notes it needs for a first adventure.

Ruby Rose, the centre of so much controversy when she was cast to play Batwoman/Kate Kane, is more than up to the job, exuding a fragile confidence that befits the dual role.

What can be as satisfying as a superhero in step with the times?
October 8, 2019
The CW Arrowverse show twists the classic superhero tropes to make for a deliciously promising tale of a young woman struggling to find her path. It's relatable until she just ultimately chooses vigilantism instead of community college.

The show still has much to prove, and could get much better or worse from here, but as far as pilots go, this is a decent beginning.

With Arrow fast approaching its end, Batwoman can easily pick up its grimdark mantle within the Arrowverse and run with it.
October 7, 2019
Batwoman's pilot features plenty of detective skills, complicated relationships..., and a hell of a lot of mentions of Bruce Wayne. It's not perfect. But it is a great set-up for what's to come as we watch Kate Kane's (Ruby Rose) journey unfold.

It sure takes a while to drop the conventions... and to go truly "Dark Knight."
October 7, 2019
Batwoman is a solid entrant into the Arrowverse universe and will likely make quick work of finding an audience on the network that has hosted the best live-action DC content for the better part of the 2010s.
October 7, 2019
It's easy enough to watch that I'll stick around to see if it blossoms into something more.
October 7, 2019
Batwoman may need to up the ante in terms of action but a combination of some compelling mysteries and a great performance from Ruby Rose ensures you'll want to keep coming back to what appears to be one of the Fall's best new TV shows.

Batwoman is off to a promising start but this series is going to need some more time to find its identity.
