The visuals and sets are beautiful, the music is good, too bad it is a limited series. But as a biopic, it largely concentrates on Lagerfeld’s (ever-unconsummated?) relationship with Jacques de Bascher, which frankly isn’t much of a varied plotline. As couturier, Lagerfeld is presented as more of a career-obsessed schemer than an innovative creative force. That’s an admissible standpoint but, again, does not really get one’s juices flowing. It’s well acted, no doubt, but especially Daniel Brühl seems stuck as the direction can’t really decide between serious drama or glossy soap opera. The series does not try to dig into what’s really special about the man it chooses to portray, so the experience remains frustrating.
