It's the sort of drama that suffers from both a surfeit of plot and also no plot at all. In other words, there is a lot happening, but no narrative through line, which makes it desperately boring. Go to Full Review

The selling point of Gurinder Chadha's series Beecham House was supposedly the equal emphasis on both Indian and European characters. But as this Poldark with turbans features mostly stereotypes, it feels like a hollow victory. Go to Full Review

I'm not sure that anything could have prepared me for this parasoled parade of cliché and desperation. Go to Full Review

Beecham House is a beautifully shot, traditionally told historical soap about cross-cultural intrigues. Go to Full Review

When the show focuses on Beecham and his staff, it's not terrible. But when it ventures off the grounds of Beecham's ornate estate, things go sideways. Go to Full Review

Elizabeth L Nov 19 Sumptuous, Subversive Series which is a completely fresh British Indian POV about life in India in 1795. This is gorgeous, beautifully crafted, and filled with smart ideas about power and the complexities of upstairs / downstairs life amongst Indian and English characters. Extremely well acted, written, directed, and shot. Love the music, costumes, colour, ambition and underlying political message. See more wendy b @WoodlandElf 05/06/2022 Beautiful costumes and cinematography. Very boring and poor scrip. See more 04/11/2021 Loved it. Brilliant cinematography. The most charismatic main character. One of the most riveting series ever on PBS Masterpiece theater. Rivaled Downton Abbey in my mind. How could it be cancelled when it ended with such a cliff hanger? See more 03/06/2021 Amazing. I just wish there was a season 2. See more 01/26/2021 Beset by a wooden script, a shallow plot and some truly cringeworthy dialogue, this series smacks more of a soap opera than a historical drama. Lesley Nicol is horribly miscast as an 18th century member of the British upper class. I felt I was watching 'Mrs Patmore Goes to India'. Her character behaved the same and there was little attempt to disguise her northern accent. In fact, disappointingly, there are no noteworthy female roles in this series. I was also irked, from episode one, by John Beecham's hat which seems to have been filched from the dusty archives of the Crocodile Dundee movie. Whoever designed the costumes deserves a swift slap on the wrist for this anachronistic transgression although, overall, the costumes and sets were one of the highlights, as they often are in movies set in India. Disappointing for a British production, however. See more 08/03/2020 I liked the show and wish there was a second season. I thought Lesley Nicol overacted her part and found her irritating.
