Critic Reviews for Beecham House Season 1

All Critics (13) | Top Critics (7)

It's the sort of drama that suffers from both a surfeit of plot and also no plot at all. In other words, there is a lot happening, but no narrative through line, which makes it desperately boring.

Beecham House is a feast for the eyes, but not always for the ears...

A spoof of itself so cheesy that it practically wafts off the screen.

It is a straightforward white saviour narrative, and unless having white characters who are as underdeveloped as the Indian ones is the equality dreamed of, it is hard to see how any progress has been achieved here at all.

The result is splendid to look at, and its take on complex geopolitics is commendably ambitious. But Beecham House will grip only if the hero transforms from wood to flesh.

Jun 24, 2019 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

The selling point of Gurinder Chadha's series Beecham House was supposedly the equal emphasis on both Indian and European characters. But as this Poldark with turbans features mostly stereotypes, it feels like a hollow victory.

There's plenty of light relief in Beecham House, making it an enjoyable watch.

Beecham House is a beautifully shot, traditionally told historical soap about cross-cultural intrigues.

When the show focuses on Beecham and his staff, it's not terrible. But when it ventures off the grounds of Beecham's ornate estate, things go sideways.

Feels more like a fairytale concocted by the Indian division of Pixar than anything remotely connected to history.

In Beecham House everything was lavish, sumptuous, and larger than life, including a few of the performances.

Audience Reviews for Beecham House: Season 1

  • Apr 11, 2021
Loved it. Brilliant cinematography. The most charismatic main character. One of the most riveting series ever on PBS Masterpiece theater. Rivaled Downton Abbey in my mind. How could it be cancelled when it ended with such a cliff hanger?

Amazing. I just wish there was a season 2.

Beset by a wooden script, a shallow plot and some truly cringeworthy dialogue, this series smacks more of a soap opera than a historical drama. Lesley Nicol is horribly miscast as an 18th century member of the British upper class. I felt I was watching 'Mrs Patmore Goes to India'. Her character behaved the same and there was little attempt to disguise her northern accent. In fact, disappointingly, there are no noteworthy female roles in this series. I was also irked, from episode one, by John Beecham's hat which seems to have been filched from the dusty archives of the Crocodile Dundee movie. Whoever designed the costumes deserves a swift slap on the wrist for this anachronistic transgression although, overall, the costumes and sets were one of the highlights, as they often are in movies set in India. Disappointing for a British production, however.

I liked the show and wish there was a second season. I thought Lesley Nicol overacted her part and found her irritating.
  • Jul 23, 2020
The stereotypes and often stilted acting didn't bother me as much as some, because of the stunning visuals. I kept 'pausing' the action to savor all the details of a scene. One glaring exception was John Beecham and that heavy, long, flapping coat of his! I kept yelling at him that it was hot, send the coat back to England and find something more appropriate to wear.

I can usually count on Masterpiece Theatre productions for high quality entertainment, however Beecham House fails miserably. The elaborate sets, costumes and exotic locales are wonderful but the cringeworthy acting, overwrought stereotypes had me cringing for everyone involved in this mess. Thank goodness it's only one season.

What a way to end a series.. Leaving all undone {^^*+^=
  • Jul 20, 2020
Lavish and fascinating. Pity it was canceled. I dont agree with the harsh criticisms.
  • Jul 19, 2020
Wonderful locations and costumes. Dreadful acting. Overwrought plot lines.
  • Jul 17, 2020
This is an exquisitely rendered story with captivating visuals and cinematography of old India before the British had taken power; and with some good character development in the context of the mix of these 2 very different cultures. The edgy ending of each installment always leaves me excited and anticipating to see what is next in how the lives and adventures unfold in the story. I am surprised to see it may not continue. That would be a big loss which I would love to see turned around as a big gain. My only complaint is the series is too short
