Ben and Kate: Season 1 (2012-2013)

Critic Consensus: It may not be a laugh riot, but Ben and Kate sports a likable cast and just enough funny -- with a touch of charm -- to make it worth rooting for.

Tv Season Info

Fox's situation comedy "Ben and Kate" follows the experiences of an adult brother and sister who move back in together in a heartfelt attempt to help each other out. On the surface, thirtysomething Ben Fox (Nat Faxon) seems irresponsible and impractical; he regards himself as an inventor and businessman, but his ill-fated attempts at entrepreneurship typically either fizzle out, or result in someone else striking it rich. Beneath the surface, however, Ben possesses an unshakeable sense of responsibility to his family. Ben's sister Kate Fox (Dakota Johnson), is a devoted single mom in her mid-20s; though she has all of the practical basics down in supporting herself and raising her six-year-old daughter Maddie (Maggie Elizabeth Jones), she feels very uneasy about the prospect of dating. The two decide to share a residence in LA, where Ben helps Kate raise Maddie. Episodes depict such adventures as Ben throwing Kate a 5-year-belated 21st birthday party, the family's trip to a uncomfortable Thanksgiving party, and Ben's failed attempt to start a new career as a wine salesman.

It's about family bonds and particular personalities, nothing more than that, and it's as wise as it is funny.

Ben & Kate is a choice serving of screwball.

Even with a great performance from Jones and neurotic supporting characters like BJ (Lucy Punch), this is fairly flimsy stuff on which to build a show.

The results are meant to be quirky and sweet, but your receptiveness to this comedy depends on your reaction to Ben. I found him incredibly annoying.

Ben and Kate is easily one of this fall's most promising (and often funny) newcomers.

Faxon's performance is reminiscent of what Will Ferrell might have done with this role a dozen or so years ago. Which by and large isn't bad.
