Martin Best is a brilliant surgeon who abruptly leaves his illustrious career in Boston to become the general practitioner in a quaint East Coast fishing village where he spent summers as a child. Unfortunately, Martin's blunt and borderline rude bedside manner rubs the quirky, needy locals the wrong way, and he quickly alienates the town, even though he's all they've got. Although Martin can expertly address any medical ailment or mystery in this idiosyncratic town, he's really just desperate to be left the hell alone. Instead, he keeps getting dragged right smack into the middle of their personal chaos, feuds and fantasies. What the locals don't know is that Martin's terse demeanor masks a debilitating new phobia and deep-seated psychological issues that prevent him from experiencing true intimacy with anyone. But tenacity is the creed of everyone in their small village, and the people who live there may be exactly what the doctor ordered.

Critics Consensus

Best Medicine may not refine the medical procedural genre, but it does offer something far more enchanting; compassion, heart and a charming lead that graces all.

It's self-consciously quirky. It's formulaic. But it's also a formula that works more often than not. And Tuccillo knows how to write for his cast. Go to Full Review

On the whole, it’s cuter, milder, more cuddly (multiple vomit jokes notwithstanding), more obvious and more whimsical, but less real, less intense and less sharply written than Doc Martin. Go to Full Review

Warm as a wool blanket, inviting as a hug and about as plausible as a fairy tale, Best Medicine offers a gift to the viewer: It allows us to imagine, at least for one hour a week, that there might be a cozier, happier, more sociable way to live. Go to Full Review

In an era when national crises dominate our attention, Best Medicine reminds us that there's still value in stories about the people and places right in front of us. Go to Full Review

This remake of beloved and long-running British series Doc Martin is clearly reaching for amusing quirkiness but, lacking the original's comic sting, settles for well-meaning predictability. Go to Full Review

Dan W @RT63070558 Apr 17 This is a solid show despite it being an adaptation of a British series although this practice is not new in the entertainment industry. Dr. Best is a detective in a way even if the mysteries he is trying to solve are medical rather than criminal in nature. See more Jake S. @TheBrewMan Apr 17 Best new show on tv in a long time. Drama/Comedy. Really a lot of fun. Some people don’t like it all being based on one town. I don’t. It’s a good time. See more Hashae M @hashaemarks1 Apr 9 Really good show, funny with good writing as well. Was looking for something to watch, started streaming it and loved it. See more Steven S. @G0dJester Apr 8 While this show stumbles early in the season with every episode being Dr. Martin Best (Josh Charles) upsets the townspeople then fixes it by the end. The show does seem to find its footing by the end of the season. This is an okay show that has just enough going for it to be entertaining. Would Recommend See more Miki M @Miki24 Apr 6 Hands down the BEST comedy to be released in many years! An Americanized remake of Doc Martin BBC. DO NOT MISS THIS SHOW! Great cast! Great writing! Great storyline! Actually family friendly too!! See more ShaSha B. @ShaSha13 Apr 2 Wasn’t sure about this at first as it seemed a bit “hokey.” However, as I watched I realized I finished the second episode feeling cozy and comforted as well as very entertained! I thought it was just me but turns out my hubby and very cool 22 yo daughter felt the same. It’s a weekly favorite now and I’m telling everyone. We all could use more comfort at the end of the day!
