Better Call Saul: Season 4 Reviews

October 10, 2018
In showing us one individual's preordained moral downfall, Better Call Saul spent Season 4 demonstrating how a hypocritical criminal justice system can ensnare a whole class of people for life.

Better Call Saul is telling a smaller story, yet - for better and less-better - it feels like it just got started.

Old dynamics flip, long-gestating character studies pay off, and feelings geyser up in surprising places.

What a sad and beautiful show Better Call Saul is. It's a lament for squandered human potential that's too cool to ever use a word like "lament," and a portrait of actions and consequences that goes far beyond simplistic finger wagging.

It's fascinating to watch all of this emotional, character-driven drama unfold against a backdrop of a battle for power in the drug trade in New Mexico... Nothing feels perfunctory or thrown away on this show, even the smallest details.

The scenes should be drab, but the work is so lovingly filmed that you come away convinced that making a Classic Roll would feel like a consummate human achievement.

The transmutation of Jimmy to Saul is likely to produce the best balance of darkness and humor that the series has mustered, if for nothing else than there's a gleeful appreciation on the part of the audience for Saul's shenanigans.

Sunday's episode, "Smoke," is well-written and hews closely to the show's mythology and tropes, including its Emmy-nominated cinematography... and its innovative camera work, which can be overdone at times.

It's not as if Better Call Saul's ability to balance these attributes is coming out of nowhere. What's surprising and thrilling is how organically it's happening.

The precision of Saul craftsmanship -- writing, direction, acting, and all the way down to craft services, for all I know -- makes this the best series on TV. And there really is no contest.

This is the quiet drama Saul thrives on. Odenkirk conveys so much with so little - a furrowed brow, an aimless stare into space - that he's made the inner life of Jimmy McGill as rich and expressive as the outer bombast of Saul Goodman.

I'm left with the feeling that the Gus Fring scenes in Better Call Saul are the dark-drama equivalent of the horrible Darth Vader scenes in Rogue One, this looming figure of evil awesomeness brought out of retirement to emanate coolness fumes.
