Most of the action in the opening episodes is familiar ensemble soap opera with conspiracy-theory embroidery.

What is it that the adults of Pretty Lake are dying from? It's not excitement, that's for sure.

The town is lovely, the premise solid if overfamiliar, but the script lacks both depth and tension (big problem), and McCurdy is one of the few cast members who can act. All of which makes it difficult to care very much.

While Between is a somewhat derivative creature that's not likely to rewrite the rules of the genre, the first episode (the only one made available to critics) sucks you right in with its intriguing premise and exciting action.

The dialogue on Between is horrendous, and the performances are not much better.

There's just something about it that seems, well, off. It's like the Designer Imposters body spray of a CW young adult sci-fi drama.
May 20, 2015
Between is all concept -- characters, production values, thematic depth, and the other things that flesh out a sci-fi idea beyond its genre trappings are flat, dull and unengaging.

A post-apocalypse is only as interesting as the people left behind, and these are all a bland, badly acted bunch.
May 20, 2015
Without a tantalizing hook to lure its viewers, nor the illusion of momentum that binge-watching creates, Between will be a tough sell.

The premiere episode's script, by Michael McGowan, gives little indication as to where the show is headed and even less indication that it's going to surprise us.
May 14, 2015
Between boasts a reasonably strong foundation, and its storylines receive promising execution.

The general look and tone don't incubate much of a desire to slip back behind the show's well-guarded walls.
