Big Love: Season 4 (2010)

Critic Consensus: Big Love remains blessed with a compelling ensemble in its fourth season, but the series' carefully orchestrated drama devolves into sudsy melodrama when Bill Henrickson mounts a political campaign that strains credulity.

Tv Season Info

The fourth season of the popular polygamy drama begins with a federal investigation into Roman Grant's (Harry Dean Stanton) whereabouts, and his business interests become an unpleasant distraction for the Henricksons and their Native American partners as they prepare to open a new casino. Meanwhile, Bill Henrickson (Bill Paxton) sets his sights on running for a seat in the Utah state senate and travels to Washington, D.C., where he tries to gain support from a Beehive State congressman (Perry King) and a powerful lobbyist (Sissy Spacek). Back at home, the passionate attraction between Ben (Douglas Smith) and Margene (Ginnifer Goodwin) causes Ben to be exiled from the family; and Adaleen (Mary Kay Place) agrees to marry J.J. (Zeljko Ivanek), but her pregnancy leads to a shocking discovery.

There remain enough good things in the new season's first two episodes for me to suffer through all the parts I don't care for.

Big Love has always delivered plenty of sturdy drama, as long as you buy the premise, and its fourth season, which starts Sunday, promises to become even more intriguingly complex.

It pains me to write that the series may be running out of steam. Or maybe getting lost in the billows of steam created by all its furiously grinding parts.
