Big Sky lurches from wacky to tacky. If this is Disney's opening salvo in a campaign to conquer streaming for grown-ups, Netflix can rest easy.

There is nothing wrong with trash. But this is just bad TV. Regressive, derivative, horribly written, filled with one-dimensional characters.

There is no trope too tired nor truism too broad to make an appearance here, and as a result, the characters feel more like a bunch of stereotypes stacked precariously on top of one another.

All you can really ask of this kind of series is that it's entertaining, and in that respect Big Sky delivers.

This kind of intrigue always makes for at least some good TV fun.

I have no idea if the series is any good yet, but it is a blast to watch.

While the ads for the show mixed humor, weirdness, and mystery together to create an intoxicating blend of excitement around this new network drama, the show itself, disappointingly, falls flat.

Big Sky has that shock at the end of the first episode that may keep you watching, but you'll learn that the story that goes from that point isn't really all that compelling.

Big Sky throws just enough storytelling curveballs to pique interest... But if the series doesn't start to cohere after a couple more episodes, some may be inclined to move on and simply leave this mystery unsolved.

The problem is that the more Kelley scratches, the more the narrative tilts towards the most exploitative and unpleasant aspects of the story.

Big Sky starts out feeling like another quirky drama before morphing into something much darker, which turns out to be pretty surprising and compelling once you get past the clunky and unpleasant task of setting it all up.
November 17, 2020
The stakes couldn't be higher, but Big Sky nonetheless has trouble making its storylines feel as urgent as they truly are because its characters rarely feel as human as they need to in order for them to land.
November 17, 2020
Big Sky is smart, lurid, disturbing, and vastly entertaining, as the best of conventional TV used to be.

Despite some of the more ridiculous parts of Big Sky-or maybe because of them-the show is genuinely worth investigating based on its first two episodes.

Big Sky knows what it is and fully embraces the melodrama, serving up corn and cliché like its life depends on it.
