This medical procedural gets hopelessly lost in the details and struggles to maintain a balance between its lead character's personal problems and the standard case-of-the-week plot lines.

It sounds intriguing, but what makes Black Box such a unique endeavor also makes it a chaotic, hellish program.

Turning a diagnosis into a magic tool for crime-solving is simpler than writing a complicated, fully realized character. It's a sign of how reliant TV is on easy formula.

A show so deeply flawed and absurdly derivative you will wonder if you, like the main character, are experiencing a manic episode.
April 24, 2014
This is, hands down, the worst series of the year, with the most annoying lead character in a season with many annoying lead characters.

It's painful to have to come down hard on Black Box because its creator has personal reasons for wanting it to succeed. On the other hand, it's even more painful to watch.

Black Box is awful. It aims for high art, but it's pure juvenilia.

For Black Box to work, you have to empathize - or at least sympathize - with Catherine. Which is tough to do given that this character knows that her behavior is hurting people around her but she makes no effort to stop.

Black Box probably won't turn out to be the Grey's successor. It likely will prove too gonzo for some viewers and not smart or subtle enough for others.

There's no way to self-medicate against the relentless drear of this new medical drama.

Black's condition is no joke - except when it is. The series is severely manic-depressive itself and emotionally manipulative in both modes.

ABC, the network that brings us Grey's Anatomy, a show about an entire hospital full of doctors who behave like middle-schoolers, describes Black Box as "cutting edge." It's so not. Though it did occasionally set my teeth on edge.

Black Box... hold[s] up in [its] own ship class.
April 24, 2014
Watching Black go off her meds and in a sense, "Hulk out," is too laughable to be harrying.

The storytelling on Black Box is so clumsy, obvious and pretentious that one's own brain can't help but shut down as a defense mechanism.
April 24, 2014
We need good shows about complicated women, as opposed to something like ABC's new Black Box, a clumsy, pretentious, clich-riddled mess that just happens to have a woman at the center of things.

Two questions, right out of the box. How could a show with Vanessa Redgrave be this terrible? And how could a show this terrible make it on the air?
April 24, 2014
Black Box hasn't quite found the sweet spot between two TV genres it's trying to straddle.

The characters, their situations, the tone, an incredibly specific character perspective and thus Black's bipolar mind -- it's all clear, forceful, yet unforced and riveting.
