Black Box: Season 1 Reviews

Turning a diagnosis into a magic tool for crime-solving is simpler than writing a complicated, fully realized character. It's a sign of how reliant TV is on easy formula.

A show so deeply flawed and absurdly derivative you will wonder if you, like the main character, are experiencing a manic episode.
April 24, 2014
This is, hands down, the worst series of the year, with the most annoying lead character in a season with many annoying lead characters.

It's painful to have to come down hard on Black Box because its creator has personal reasons for wanting it to succeed. On the other hand, it's even more painful to watch.

Black's condition is no joke - except when it is. The series is severely manic-depressive itself and emotionally manipulative in both modes.

Black Box... hold[s] up in [its] own ship class.

Watching Black go off her meds and in a sense, "Hulk out," is too laughable to be harrying.

Two questions, right out of the box. How could a show with Vanessa Redgrave be this terrible? And how could a show this terrible make it on the air?
April 24, 2014
Black Box hasn't quite found the sweet spot between two TV genres it's trying to straddle.

The characters, their situations, the tone, an incredibly specific character perspective and thus Black's bipolar mind -- it's all clear, forceful, yet unforced and riveting.

Vanessa Redgrave?! Darling, how on Earth did you end up in this awful show? Let's get you out of here - grab your shawl.

Despite a strong sense that much of this material has been seen before, Black Box offers something novel-a confident, unapologetic character drama.

Its clinically quirky heroine makes for a memorable premiere episode, but in later episodes, her flavor is diluted in a stew of typical plot lines and characters, and we're watching just another good but unmemorable hospital show.
April 22, 2014
Black Box is an awful title for a not-much-better show - another "physician, heal thyself" drama, in which bipolar disorder becomes a license to flights of visual fancy and periodic bouts of overacting.
April 22, 2014
Few shows are as instantly annoying as Black Box, which sets some kind of record (certainly a personal one) for almost instant agitation.
April 22, 2014
The series gets off to an absorbing start, complete with solid character development and an interesting twist.

[The] unusual medical cases feel like a way of marking time until Dr. Black can once again go off her meds and turn into a sex fiend in a show that might as well be called "Fifty Shades of Grey Matter."

Despite some madly improbable adventures in the hospital's brain-surgery unit, creator Amy Holden Jones and team have delivered a Black Box whose content is both smart and seductive.
