Blick does a masterful job of unwinding a complex plot that touches on the arrogance of European nations imposing their justice on Africans and the brutal nature of political arrangements.

Black Earth Rising is actually about seeking the light. As Kate learns the buried truth about the past...she begins to escape its clutches, transforming herself from an innocent victimized by history into a wised-up woman who's trying to make it.

Michaela Coel and John Goodman are riveting in this tale of a woman searching for answers about how she survived the Rwandan genocide.

What's most striking about Black Earth Rising -- outside of the constant touching, the terrific performances, and the thoughtful filmmaking, anyway -- is that it's essentially a legal thriller mixed with a painful search for personal history.

While he rarely offers definitive answers to the philosophical questions he raises, Blick's narratives leave few loose ends. Here, states of the mind and heart are as important as states of the nation.

Michaela Coel is mesmerizing, it's impossible to not be riveted to her striking and expressive face. She is alternately anxious, confident, confrontational, afraid, physically intimidating, subdued, confused, sad, enraged, and bereft at turns.

Complex, excellent British series about Rwanda is violent.

As good as the actors are here, they deserved a less melodramatic and cliche script than they got. Luckily, star Michaela Cole has a nice chemistry with John Goodman and the pair save this from being just another offering on Netflix.

Good storytelling captures the wider world, and this series not only delivers suspense, but much to actually think about afterwards.

Coel has great presence and commands every shot she's in, but her protagonist's depression feels cartoonish and tacked on as a character trait.

Audience Reviews for Black Earth Rising: Miniseries

    Complicated but worth the effort.

Strong start but from episiode 4 onwards the directing becomes unwatchable using repetitive panning/close-upping and down-your-throat-symbolism. Also, the storyline (and overacting) of the main character gets so overthetop that I stopped caring about it. In the end I'm sort of glad I watched it due to the indepth and holistic view of the Rwanda genocide which was truly horrific and worth pondering after watching.

It Could Be Great! But it's all over the place :(
  • Feb 28, 2019
Compelling political drama with an excellent cast of characters uses the episodic form of a TV series to slowly reveal several layers of a conspiracy further complicated by the diverging interests of the former European occupiers of an African country.

Absolutely loved it! Beautifully written, cinematic poetry...absolutely perfect!
  • Feb 22, 2019
I felt that they allowed the mystery to drag on a bit longer than audiences expected, but as the veil was rolled back, I felt relieved alongside Kate as she finally got to the truth.

Netflix is getting harder to choose a good show from, but this is the best I've watched in a long time. Highly recommended for those who can hold back their Western prejudice concerning African conflicts and accept the challenge of looking at them through "Southern eyes".

I was expecting more due to the cast.
  • Feb 12, 2019
Was riveted to this series. Many times had to rewind to catch things that I missed while knitting! Absolutely breath taking. The acting was superb. All the characters were believable, and the storyline was so relevant and heartbreaking. Made me check to what was the outcome the UN did take on this tragedy!!
