This design minimizes wastefulness, but it also allays our fear of missing out.

"Bandersnatch" falls short of the best "Black Mirror" episodes... But as an attempt to play around with your viewing experience, it's not a bad way to spend a couple of hours.

I found it quite possible to click through the pathways in "Bandersnatch" without finding a reason for any version of this story to exist.

"Bandersnatch" is fascinating, original, staggering in scope - and I still found the whole process stressful and unpleasant, and occasionally just straight-up upsetting. It's an achievement I admire, but not one I'm all that interested in.

Where Bandersnatch was clever was in making that lost, trapped sensation a strength, bound tightly to character and plot.

Writer Charlie Brooker's take on the medium stands out from the bunch. Not only is it unlike anything you've ever seen in this medium, it also makes you think in ways that only a show as dark and existential as Black Mirror can.

The genius of Bandersnatch is that it's ultimately a critique of interactivity.

It's fiendish stuff, but an undeniably clever new entry in the boundlessly reflective Black Mirror canon: the episode that never ends.

It's designed for trickery, and, to Charlie Brooker's credit, it doesn't skimp.

Bandersnatch is the closest Netflix has come yet to engineering a true rabbit hole of content. What's more: It's a bloody entertaining hole to fall down.

Taken as an episode of Black Mirror, it wasn't the series' finest hour-plus-however-many-convolutions-you-got-through-before-your-own-brain-started-folding-in-on-itself... But these are problems of infancy. A new genre is now here.

This "event" gives us an admittedly unique experience but little to hold onto after the fact. It doesn't even measure up to the bar the show itself has set.

Bandersnatch is, quite simply, a brilliant foray into a (more or less) new realm of visual storytelling.

Bandersnatch has a couple of classic Black Mirror-ish tricks to spring, and on a first viewing (which might take you an hour and a half or so), they're a lot of fun... Unfortunately, it's especially poorly suited to being watched more than once.

"Bandersnatch," as creative work and not as experiment, falls so short of the standard "Black Mirror" has set that to put it forward is to risk the credibility the series's first four seasons have earned.

By that measure, give everyone associated with the stunt -- including "Black Mirror" creator Charlie Brooker -- an "A" for effort, but maybe a "C+" for the execution.

But that doesn't make the overarching story memorable or entertaining, at least dramatically. It might be entertaining as an experience or even an experiment, but I would argue that's only true part of the time, depending on the choices you make.

Ultimately, what may make this Black Mirror event a true watershed moment is what it foreshadows about the platform that streams it.

Bandersnatch is a feverish first, combining the emotion of a film with the addictiveness of a videogame.

It's tech we're supposed to be able to boss around that bosses us around instead. In that way, it's a perfect Netflix show.
