Critic Reviews for Bluff City Law Season 1

[Jimmy] Smits is solid enough as the patriarch of Bluff City Law while [Caitlin] McGee also makes her presence felt in some scenes. Overall, though, this is yet another same old, same old broadcast network drama series.

The crusading civil attorneys angle enables Bluff City Law to feel different and hopeful, a nice contrast to the Dick Wolf courtroom-style drama that dominates TV.

At least they were able to film in Memphis and there are moments of decent texture, but generally the show feels like something David E. Kelley would have made and made better 20 years ago.

The family friction fails to register; mostly the show feels like a pilot from some random yesteryear's fall TV season.

So far, so good. We have the meat and potatoes of your standard-issue boilerplate legal procedural.

Bluff City Law is less interested in legal issues than it is in eliciting tears, and even in that regard, it fails miserably. It's more insulting than it is touching.

Solid law drama addresses social justice, family issues.

Sep 26, 2019 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

Bluff City Law... seems to have forgotten that viewers have actually seen legal dramas before... tired and overwritten.

The setting in Elvis' old hometown is emphasized, if only to keep your mind off Smits' earlier legal locale in L.A. Law.

Sep 27, 2019 | Full Review…

Yet another legal drama, this series also suffers from preachiness, with father-daughter lawyers (played by Jimmy Smits and Caitlin McGee) going overboard in their idealistic quest for save-the-world justice.

Nov 7, 2019 | Full Review…

Despite the cast, the cases in Bluff City Law are just too generic for us to stay interested.

Sep 23, 2019 | Full Review…

There's a lot to love about this series including it's impressive pedigree, but the most compelling aspect is how the overall story makes you feel.

Audience Reviews for Bluff City Law: Season 1

Top show of the year. Looking forward to many more seasons to come with this cast!

Many new TV series are over-dramatized. I think Bluff City Law did a good job of connecting some believable situations into a well written legal drama with a decent set of characters, all of which are developed well with the storylines. What makes this show less believable and less interesting is that virtually every case ends up being won, which isn't the reality in the real world. Often, justice isn't served in the justice system. For that, I give the series a hit. There wasn't a single failure or storyline that developed from a failure that could be redeemed, which I think is a failure in the script. The actors bring the stories to life, Smits' delivers a good performance bringing his relatively conservative character to life, while McGee draws in the more revolutionary role with style. In fact, the good part of the script is that it matches a MacGyver style 'get it done with whatever tools you can find' case with legalese, essentially a means to get things done when the odds seem impossible. But, some of the storylines seem stereotypical,, tired and exhaustive. Stereotypes like entire towns being ravaged by opioids (and the obsessive media coverage it entails), and the legal team sweeping in to save the poor souls in the town from big pharma, and of course winning their case. In reality, it seemed like a cheesy story. But overall, I recommend it. Good TV, not the best show in history, but certainly one that is captivating and worth watching. And perks to the crew for getting out of Hollywood and filming on location in Memphis. Actually seeing scenes from the Mississippi River and Memphis streets and locations makes the script come to life. I hope the series is extended.

Really enjoy the series. The social issues the firm takes on plague our country today. Hope there will be a second season.

Loved it. Gutted it has been canned. I didn't start watching until episode 5 - life was busy and I was still working my way through new shows but this and Prodigal Son have been the best.

I enjoyed this show. It dealt with some very serious modern issues without overplaying them. And while procedural, the story of one client arcs throughout the story, a testament to the reality that not all cases are over once the court has ruled. A comfortable watch with lovable, imperfect characters, that inspire us to be better in realistic, achievable ways.

Awesome and is about current stories and is a unbiased series unlike most shows on network television.
