Critic Reviews for Boardwalk Empire Season 1

All Critics (65) | Top Critics (29)

All this was efficiently done - but no more than efficiently. It felt peculiarly safe, even derivative, with no great splashes of boldness.

This is gritty Warner Bros. gangland done up in ritzy Paramount style... Give Boardwalk time, and it'll take you away to another time.

As the cameras swoop across the vast pier, with its shimmering lights and colorful storefronts, you can practically taste the salt water taffy.

Boardwalk Empire is not only head and shoulders above its broadcast competition; it may deserve a place in the honor roll of HBO's best series ever.

The tension between the need to tighten the moral grip and the desire to act out in ever more grandiose, licentious ways gives the drama its pulse and its relevance.

Boardwalk Empire is the best new drama series of the fall season -- and probably a cinch Emmy pacesetter as well.

It's good, obviously, but not yet great. Once the hype settles and we can forget about the money, it might be something.

I had mixed feelings about the premiere.

The first season of Boardwalk Empire is as eye-catching and exciting a marriage of top TV and movie talent as you could hope for.

This world of underground crime in Atlantic City has substance, drama, romance and plenty of action for everyone.

It was good enough for me to keep going, even if Scorsese seemed to be a bit what the Internet might call going-through-the-motions-y.

I just hope the rest of the episodes are as deliciously brutal and beautiful as the first.

Audience Reviews for Boardwalk Empire: Season 1

After friend's recommendation, I began watching Boardwalk Empire. I immediately got hooked on the brilliant writing, dark tone, period costumes and violent plot. Boardwalk Empire is a must watch for fans of gangster films.

When watching a show about gangsters/mobsters, let’s be honest, we watch for the violence and the killing. And Boardwalk Empire certainly had its share of such. But, it wasn’t a perfect show. And what I disliked most revolved around its killings. I was looking forward to seeing some surprising moments; some shocking deaths. But every death in season one is ever-so-predictable. I could tell you instantly who wasn’t surviving another 5 minutes into the series. How? Because the only characters they killed off were those who got very little screen time. Their roles weren’t heavily involved and emphasized. What they should have done was build those characters, regardless of how irrelevant they are to the world. Show their small-time criminal acts, at least to establish them. Give us an episode where they survive and seem like they may become a bigger part to the show, then go and off them. Shock the audience a bit. And I think they’ll do this as the seasons move forward. Some of the highlights so far, I enjoy the musical score, there’s a lot of intriguing characters, I can’t wait to continue seeing the evolution of Al Capone, the masked sniper is such an interesting character, love the way Arnold Rothstein conducts operations and carries himself, I’m looking forward to seeing what transpires with the oddball Prohibition agent, and want to see increased bad-assery from Enoch “Nucky” Thompson (Steve Buscemi). There’s definite improvement to be made, but a lot of promise.

Captivating and brutal show. Absolute masterpiece for a television series.

Boardwalk Empire brims with energy and detail, but the pace of the show runs too slow for my liking and suffers from a dizzying array of subplots and characters that are difficult to distinguish from each other; it doesn't help that they all wear trench coats, tuxedos and fedoras in every scene.

Enoch ‘Nucky’ Thompson is a political figure in Atlantic City, New Jersey during the early 1900s during prohibition. He lives a lavish lifestyle that draws the eye of the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI). He also finds a new love interest and has a relative of sorts who wants in on the family business. Can Nucky accommodate all of these loose ends while evading the FBI and holding down his political office? The first episode was directed by Martin Scorsese and cost over $18 million to make, the highest cost pilot episode of all time. Scorsese and Mark Wahlberg financially back this series while Steve Buscemi stars as the main character. The acting in this series is outstanding and the cast also includes Michael Shannon, Michael Kenneth Williams, Michael Pitt, Shea Whigham, and Dabney Coleman. This season, along with season 2, are amongst the best first two seasons of a television series ever (on par with Game of Thrones, Scandal, and Dexter). I love how the characters are developed and the show is so well written. This is a must see television series that is worth your time. Grade: A
