Critic Reviews for Golden Days for Boys and Girls

When Nucky Thompson is getting nostalgic for his Dickensian childhood, you know that things can't be all copacetic in 1931. Not so good for Nucky, very good for us.

As things draw to a close, the odds of the great characters developed over the last four years reuniting grow, which can only lead to great things. A less scattered Boardwalk is one that will likely end in triumph.

We got a glimpse into Nucky's childhood in Atlantic City. It was a fitting series of flashbacks, which gave all new perspective to what drives Nucky. The scenes at his home served to remind us how far he has come.

For its final season, the show seems to want to bring the focus back onto Nucky, but as usual there's no particularly compelling reason to care about what happens to him.

No other show on television says so much about its world through sight and sound alone.

Boardwalk looks like it's going to remind us in its final episodes the past always comes back around, either repeating itself, returning to haunt somebody or just ready to bite somebody in the ass. I can't think of a better way for the show to go out.

Welcome back to Boardwalk Empire, which begins its fifth series with the sort of audacity that usually comes near the end of one of its slow-build seasons: We ditch six years, and open in 1931.
