Critic Consensus: Despite the limitations of its shortened final season, Boardwalk Empire wraps up the saga of Nucky Thompson in an effective series finale that both offers closure and leaves a few things to ponder.

Critic Reviews for Eldorado

Here was a man so overly-concerned with who he was to everyone else and what he was perceived as being that he never quite got around to finding himself. But damn, was that one well-written ride.

While it may have seemed like a stellar idea to Korder and Winter... having the teen pull the trigger just felt just a tad old hat -- much like the 'Mustache Petes' Lucky Luciano so desperately wanted to rid himself of. Been there, done that.

Nothing is tougher than ending a show, and Boardwalk got it right. If Lucky Luciano survived, so did Margaret Schroeder Thompson, and that's a trade we'll take any day.

For a series finale as obsessed with the notion of legacy as "Eldorado" was, being unsure what your main character's legacy is may be exactly the kind of assertion that's called for. The series seems content to let the audience think about such things.

It was a fitting finale and a tremendous finish to what was not only one of HBO's best series, but television in general.

I felt like the finale had more to offer us, a different payoff, but alas it wasn't to be. "Eldorado" may not have provided me with the closure I wanted, but there's closure here all the same.

"Eldorado" was a fine, appropriate capper to the series -- one last example of how well Winter, Howard Korder, Tim Van Patten and company knew how to bring stories to a satisfying close.

In its characterization and dialogue, in its shots of the lonely shore or a smoky nightclub, in the moments of dry humor or unexpected tenderness, Boardwalk Empire was an often-fascinating portrait of an age.

As hit-or-miss as Boardwalk Empire was during its five-season run, you can't say it didn't have a tale worth telling, full of characters both real and semi-fictional, living their lives until they know damn well they couldn't anymore.

The sins of Enoch "Nucky" Thompson's gangster past catch up with him in "Eldorado," the series finale of HBO's Prohibition-era drama Boardwalk Empire.
