News & Interviews for BoJack Horseman: Season 1
Thanks to the clever dialogue and skilled voice work, BoJack grows on us. Providing occasional laughs and even a little romance, the show... isn't quite binge-worthy, but it's a good snack.
BoJack is perhaps a little more clever than it is uproariously funny, but it is often very clever, and, moreover, well-tuned to the ludicrousness of the sort of low-level fame that surrounds BoJack.
The show is relentlessly mediocre, and I was as eager to see the episodes end as I had been to watch the show in the first place.
Amid a slate of TV shows where story arcs are neatly wrapped up and protagonists come to upbeat epiphanies over the span of 30 minutes, Bojack is a soothing balm of darkness.
Once [the show found its stride]...it revealed a great sensitivity alongside its earthier elements, as well as a wonderful articulacy in unpacking our quotidian burdens and entertainment-industry conventions.
While BoJack Horseman might not be the flashiest or most heralded show, it stands among the most entertaining and most original. The balance between drama and comedy makes it unique in the animated landscape and far more rewarding.
Once BoJack looks inward, it quickly develops into a heart-wrenching tale of failure and the journey to forgive oneself, a much more complex, dark subject to handle than silly Hollywood (excuse me; Hollywoo) satires and hilarious cat jokes.
It's done something that very few animated (or live-action) shows have even bothered to approach before: depression.
But even in its most relentless moments, there's enough humor to keep BoJack from sinking as low as BoJack himself often descends-and enough poignancy to keep viewers coming back, ideally for several seasons to come.
The show succeeds on every necessary level. Its first 12 episodes feel nearly perfect in every way.
Audience Reviews for BoJack Horseman: Season 1
Jan 20, 2021Disgusting, its nor funny, nor it has drama thrill. The art is good overall, it looks nice, but the setting, main plot arc as well as secondary arcs are so uninspired, so tremendously boring and out of touch that it makes me question: "Who and why would actually enjoy this?"
Dec 16, 2020Although critics didn't see the beauty of this show until later seasons, Bojack won me over from Season 1 onward.
Dec 04, 2020The first half of the season can be a bit of a drag, but sticking around until the 2nd half will provide a very rewarding experience as we see the directing and writing both get increasingly better.
Nov 20, 2020The first season is completely skippable, but PLEASE watch the rest of the nearly flawless, wonderful show.
Nov 12, 2020The always witty, occasionally introspective Bojack Horseman uses its first season to establish its rich world and set up the prolific pieces of what will go on to be one of the most beloved series on Netflix.
Aug 25, 2020Bojack season 1 was a tad more light hearted than the rest of the series. It was a great kick starter into an even more amazing series.
Aug 18, 2020First season starts out a little light hearted. A lot more fun. Nothing too heavy. About half way through, serious themes begin to appear, and it becomes clear the show is not just a simple comedy cartoon. This is important, has something to share.
Aug 03, 2020Although a different tone from the rest of the show, Season 1 offers a warm welcome to the characters that we'd be getting to know for the time to come. Some wacky story lines, which gives the show a taste of fun times, however still delivers the reality and flaws that we get to love about the characters like Bojack.
Jul 10, 2020It's very funny and is definitely different from other cartoons. Certainly would recommend this show
May 12, 2020It's like i see myself on screen. Heartbreaking, freakin' fragile people - ehmm animals or whatever - trying to peace together their soul-fragments throughout the whole season. The past chases us, we can't run from ourselves, and yeah.. maybe not everbyody deserves a closure. But, it gets easier later. Absoluletly love it! It's like a therapy for me, and i devour its episodes like BoJack the pills.
