I think there could be a lot of life left in BoJack Horseman, but it can't continually promise change and then renege on that to play out the same arc again and again.

So on purely technical grounds, season five is BoJack's weakest. But it also might be the show's bravest.

While The Simpsons may always be the 'best' animated show in the history of television, BoJack might be the most daring.

The writing is razor-sharp, the targets pointed and the humanity of it all is as messy as it is complete. This is a series in the form of its life.

It strikes a perfect balance between genuine laughter and laughing through the tears. And that's how it distinguishes itself from so many other sitcoms currently on television.

The series has watched as BoJack has done despicable things, but in its own comic, self-lampooning way, it has struggled to come to terms with this despicableness.

It's easy to call this season "more of the same", but for a show as good as BoJack Horseman, that's a compliment.

This [season] is hopeful, even amid the doom and gloom of the show's topics.

BoJack remains Will Arnett's magnum opus. His ability to inflect his voice with simultaneous ego and self-hatred is astounding.

For a series that consistently slides between happiness, misery, and everything in-between, this installment proves that Bojack Horseman continues to explore all of those feelings as freshly as it did in its first season.

It's refreshing not to be babied with easy resolutions or conventional framing, to watch a show that asks us to do more as we watch cartoon humans, cats, dogs, and horses wrestle with our most deep-seated insecurities and fears.

In a world that's becoming increasingly polarized in its lowest-common-denominator shakedown of good vs. evil, BoJack Horseman refuses to give easy answers to hard questions.

If you've enjoyed the previous seasons of BoJack Horseman that you should catch up on the latest entry. I'll also recommended that you take it slowly. It is emotionally devastating in the best way possible, but emotional devastation is still devastating.

Season 5 interrogates a culture that celebrates those who refuse to take responsibility for themselves.

Crippling existential dread pervades nearly every crevice of Bojack Horseman's fifth go-round, making it arguably the show's most quietly devastating season to date.

BoJack has always been good at having character-based episodes as a kind of template for the series and Season 5 is no exception to that.

This is heavy material to cram into 25 minutes, but each episode succeeds through a mix of sharp dialogue and the goofy humor inherent to a world equally populated by humans and anthropomorphic animals.

The past catches up with BoJack in season five, as all of the show's characters crash into the consequences of their impulsive decisions.

No one's fully happy with the way things are going, the status quo is uneasy at best, and it's a safe bet things will get weirder and darker the longer it goes on. Exactly where BoJack Horseman is at its best.
