What to Know

Critics Consensus

Bookish may have the hallmarks of a vintage Holmes, but this detective trek is refreshingly modern and lovely company.

Book’s whole bookseller-by-day, gumshoe-by-night deal is adorable, as is his chummy marriage to his childhood friend Trottie. Go to Full Review

Among the yet-to-be-solved questions surrounding “Bookish” is whether viewers will, like a 1946 London policeman, find Book insufferable, or if Mr. Gatiss and his insistent twinkle find a place in their hearts. My bet is on the latter. Go to Full Review

Like the best, by which I mean my favorite such series, it’s humorous and fun, while also being human and sad. Go to Full Review

With its slow pace, its carefully curated aesthetic, and a script that combines mystery, irony, and tenderness, the series is a delight. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Mrs R @MrsRusch Apr 11 Mark Gatiss is an excellent show creator, writer, and director. This show has the makings of an excellent period murder mystery. However, as talented as he is, he has begun overloading his stories with homosexuality, especially where it does nothing for the plot. I get that he's gay, but I'm not, my family isn't, the vast number of viewers (statistically) are not, so why always shove it in our faces? The stories are excellent on their own, they don't need this senseless detour all the time. For those of us who don't support that lifestyle (and there are more than Hollywood wants to accept) it detracts from the excellence of the show. How about telling a story for the sake of the story, the murder mystery, and let it stand on its own? I really do like this show & will return for series 2. I just hope the concentration is more on the mysteries and not on his sex life. See more Sara M. @skdenver999 Feb 17 I made this account just so I could rate Bookish as high as possible. Its absolutely perfect! Mysterious, funny, moving, and never boring. I laughed, I cried, it's the best thing on TV rn. See more Jose Luis M @RT41734056 Jan 27 Si te gustan las series de misterio y asesinatos por resolver, esta serie será de tu agrado, ligera y entretenida See more Cindy M @CindyCindy Jan 26 The post WWII setting could be a character in the story but is minimally so, a big mistake by the writer and producers. The first two episodes (parts 1 and 2) are slow and watching is tedious as the characters and writing are utterly unoriginal. Add to that dull characters and we have the perfect mix for a failed recipe. Book is imperious and not particularly likeable and is a one dimensional and predictable, stale sterotype. The storyline moves slowly and feels very Agatha Christie. Unoriginal. And the supposedly clever name Book is not clever or funny. See more Nicholas D. @9toes Jan 25 I found this story very entertaining and well written as well as well acted. I have finished all 6 episodes so therefore I’m going to wait for season 2. The story line is reminiscent of Film Noir even though it’s in color. If you enjoy dramatic mystery then you can enjoy the ride If not then try it it may fit into your liking. Also you can stop at any time but please be kind to it in your review as we the fans want more information from Bookish. See more Jonathan M @Jonathan555 Jan 14 I have PBS Passport, so I was able to view the whole limited series. A show set in post-WWII that has stilted dialogue out of the 50s-60s. Overacted and predictable. See more Read all reviews
