There's a real glee about the way Breaking Bad is plotted that is hard to articulate; it's this element of playfulness that means that its payoffs, when they come, are satisfying in a way that I've never experienced in a television show before.

That so much of this material was, by Gilligan's admission, written on the fly (no season-three pun intended!) is amazing. It all fits together better than it has any right to.

One of the best single seasons of television in the last twenty years.

Breaking Bad is dark and almost dormant... with most of the main characters mired in depression, anger, fear and/or apathy. That doesn't mean it's not compelling.

Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul give wonderful performances throughout a riveting season, and Giancarlo Esposito is simply one of the most insidious and nasty "quiet guy" villains ever on a TV show.

With the continuing production of outstanding shows on cable networks, television now is often better than the movies. And no show makes that case more strongly than Breaking Bad.

It's the culmination of one of the most exciting seasons in television history, but it has one final shocking moment even after the dust settles.

Every note of these opening episodes is pitch perfect, building a slow crescendo of what looks to be an impressively strong season.

I've always thought of Breaking Bad as a deadly grafting of Western and horror-thriller tropes. Gilligan's crew even sets up some of their shots in homage to Sergio Leone.

Show creator Vince Gilligan has created a world where something may go wrong any minute; he keeps the tension taut as it's obvious something is going to break very soon.

Creator Vince Gilligan and his team faced a hefty challenge to top Season 3, but they managed it. Superb performances by Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul are equalled by Giancarlo Esposito as chicken/meth kingpin Gus Fring.

The writing is outstanding and each character's performance is spot-on - it's difficult to separate actor Aaron Paul from the endearingly damaged Jesse Pinkman, Walt's right-hand meth man.

We've all witnessed greatness tonight, but we're still left with one huge question: Where do we go from here.

It was a very good opener to what should be a fantastic season.
