Breakout Kings: Season 1 (2011)

Critic Consensus: Breakout Kings is a show that likes to take risks, but the execution is flat and other elements don't stand out from the rest of the procedural pack.

An exciting crime drama that adds to its appeal with some character types we don't often see.

A&E's Breakout Kings is a terrific log-line in search of an actual premise.

Silly? Yes. Intensely watchable? Also yes.

Breakout Kings is distinctly average fare, quickly smothering the fun from its alluring premise.

There's a distinct lack of suspense.

The only actor who mines any gold from the ho-hum material he's given is Simpson, whose stand-out performance feels like a waste.

It all feels rote, as though Olmstead and Santora are just trying to give the networks what they think the networks want but haven't really thought these characters through beyond the broadest of types.

Breakout Kings fits in with the general grubbiness, and yet, thanks to its wit, it stands out, like a diamond in the dirt.
