Hugo Rifkind The Times (UK) 02/28/2024
Over three episodes the plot arc was long — things just got worse — but you could feel Mercurio’s skill in the way he kept the action ticking along, even if beat-by-beat we might not have precisely understood what was going on. Go to Full Review

It is a painful subject to revisit but this is a tour de force, exposing political complacency and reminding us how, despite all the clapping, NHS staff, many of whom died in the line of duty, are still taken for granted. Go to Full Review

If the series is strong on message, then it is somewhat weaker on storytelling. For all the unsanitised realism of scenes depicting gasping patients and nerve-frayed staff, there are a few too many over-elaborated exchanges... Go to Full Review

Judged purely as drama, Breathtaking often felt hamstrung by its own fervour. Go to Full Review
Aidan Smith Scotsman 02/28/2024
Breathtaking is terrific but virtually unwatchable, even if your family got off relatively lightly, not counting all the kids’ lost learning. Go to Full Review
Alison Rowat The Herald (Scotland) 02/27/2024
The blistering pace and cliff-hanger endings were pure Jed Mercurio. A quieter, and ultimately more powerful contribution, came from Joanna Froggatt playing a consultant trying to do her best. Go to Full Review

Gil B @RT34851994 03/15/2025 There's a moment in ITV's "Breathtaking" that I can't shake. Enrico stands outside the hospital where his wife, an NHS nurse, lies dying. His hand pressed against cold glass, his phone frozen mid-call. Again. I've been there. That particular hell of watching someone you love slip away through a screen. The way Enrico's face crumples when the connection fails - that's not acting. That's the face every one of us wore when technology failed us at the moments we needed it most. What haunts me is how perfectly they captured the cruel irony. His wife spent years caring for others in those same halls, yet died alone in them. The scenes of Enrico trying to reach her through iPads and phones, his desperate attempts to be there somehow, anyhow - it's almost unbearable to watch because it's so painfully true. Most devastating is his final video call. The way he tries to smile for her even as his world collapses. The careful way he chooses his words, knowing they might be his last. The absolute helplessness in his eyes when the screen freezes one last time. Some might say it's too soon for these stories. But for those of us who know what it's like to lose someone this way, who understand Enrico's grief in our bones, it's a validation of sorts. Yes, this happened. Yes, it was as awful as we remember. And no, we weren't alone in our strange, suspended grief. This isn't just drama. It's memory. And for many of us, it's still an open wound. See more Read all reviews
