The acting, directing, scripting are all fine, sometimes they are very good, but the show has yet to really take off, although the potential is there.

The Britannia cast plays it terribly straight for the most part, and fortunately that doesn't get in the way of its bizarre swagger.

One would probably have to get deeper into the Britannical weeds than I did to fully appreciate the ornate quality of the plotline, but several of the characters and performers make their presence felt early on-most entertainingly, Nikolaj Lie Kaas.

Seriously, this series - whose creators include Jez Butterworth, a co-screenwriter of the Whitey Bulger drama "Black Mass" - is a fabulous, stupid mess.

Britannia, which is weird and druggy and at times howling mad, is rather funny. It definitely won't be everyone's cup of tea, but it is a bit of a riot. You might not expect that of something that has extreme violence as its meat.

Britannia is the kind of programme in which you need to keep your wits entirely about you in order to keep track of the games of three-dimensional chess every character is playing or abandon them altogether and just enjoy.
