Broadchurch, a character-driven mystery set in a small coastal English town, had an excellent first season, a so-so second season, but is back to "very good" in this, its last season.

Tennant and Colman are great as always. Despite their relationship still remaining prickly, three years on you get the sense that there is much underlying affection and mutual respect between the two of them.

Broadchurch ticks all the Brit drama boxes and still manages to stand out from the mysteries some of us can't get enough of.

After a disappointing second season, Broadchurch is back at its brilliant best.

Broadchurch ... is distinctive for various reasons.

The series paints a fairly grim view of humanity, but Colman and Tennant save the series from being completely and utterly depressing.

As Broadchurch takes its final bow, it goes out on a hopeful, if bittersweet note. "We do our job, Miller," Hardy says quietly. "That's all we can do."

But with the end in sight, and having learned from some (though not all) of its past mistakes, Broadchurch returns with a new crime and a larger theme about consent that may still be a shadow of its former self, but still a very compelling one.

A fine return to form, after the notorious mess made of the second series.
June 28, 2017
Broadchurch finishes out its run as a distinctive cross between two mystery genres -- the hard-boiled-detective and the so-called British cozy.

Broadchurch accomplishes the whodunit in a wholly engaging, yet socially aware manner, anchored by its devotion-inspiring leads.

Broadchurch sets a high bar for the British mystery, sustaining its mournful suspense over eight hours without ever lapsing into cheap sensation or shock. I'll miss this place.

After such a rewarding final season, it's hard to accept that this is the last we'll see of Hardy and Miller.

While this finale can't really measure up to the show's breathtaking debut season, it is a well-made farewell to my favorite crime fighting duo on TV right now.

[It] does what the final season of any great show should do: It wraps some things up, but with enough slightly open doors to dangle the hope that Chibnall and his superior cast could return to "Broadchurch" sometime in the future.

But while the show doesn't shy away from sensitive issues, at heart it's a police procedural that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Colman and Tennant have evolved an amusingly peevish and impatient banter between themselves, though maybe it's just as well Broadchurch is ending before they can turn into Dempsey and Makepeace.

Here, the first act plays out with unusually careful detail and sombreness; it feels as though television is also undertaking sexual offences training.

Broadchurch, I'm delighted to say, veered back with a welcome clunk on to high good form.

The investigation is only ever part of Broadchurch's appeal. The rest lies in its characters and the bickering rapport between Hardy and Miller, which pleasingly, hasn't changed a jot.
