Delivered by Azaria with splendid aplomb, the new season demonstrates how important the actual presence of baseball - as engaged in on the field or seen from the announcer's booth - has been to the show.

There is something so fundamentally ridiculous about this man and his world that it still feels miraculous how deeply felt Azaria's performance can be, and how much Jim's personal relationships wind up mattering.

Even if Brockmire had never assumed any of these ambitions, let alone followed through on them, it would still be one of the funniest shows on television on a line-by-line, scene-by-scene basis.
