Critics Consensus

Brotherhood achieves an authentic sense of place while unleashing ferociously good actors onto a story rife with thought-provoking moral quandaries, but some viewers may find the series too glum and patient in its storytelling.

Critic Reviews for Brotherhood Season 1

All Critics (22) | Top Critics (14)

Every hour is impressive, surprising and entertaining. Like its fraternal protagonists, it stands up to some strong competition, and doesn't blink. Or need to.

Nov 15, 2018 | Rating: 4/4 | Full Review…

This almost mythic story about a politician and his gangster brother is an unexpected summer gift.

Nov 15, 2018 | Full Review…

The depiction of a small, distinctive subculture, with all its overlapping allegiances, is Brotherhood's strength. The shock value, and the overarching themes of moral compromise and sibling rivalry seem secondary.

Nov 15, 2018 | Full Review…

Too slow and predictable... The acting is good, and the direction and settings are solid, but the saga of the Caffee brothers tends to plod more than it intrigues.

Nov 15, 2018 | Full Review…

Brotherhood is a heavy stew, with chunks of The Sopranos floating in it, and it reeks of stage Irishness... Bless this show, Father, for it is blarney.

Nov 15, 2018 | Full Review…

It will take time to develop interest in the Providential population -- more time than many a viewer is willing to give.

Nov 15, 2018 | Full Review…

It's got all the hallmarks of a quality drama: serialized story, layered characters with depth, but it's also pretty dull and only occasionally as involving as it ought to be.

Nov 15, 2018 | Full Review…

It's designed to grab your attention and rub your face in the fact that this is going to be an edgy pay-cable show that breaks all the rules, but it plays almost as a Sopranos parody.

Nov 15, 2018 | Full Review…

If you're of the school of thought that there are only a half-dozen or so basic stories out there and what matters most is the execution, then "Brotherhood" does a strong job of transcending its familiar roots.

Nov 15, 2018 | Full Review…

Brotherhood packs a wallop in terms of foul language and graphic violence, but it also offers complex characters whose motivations run deep.

Nov 15, 2018 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

Clarke, an Australian actor, is charismatic and convincing... Isaacs, a British actor known as Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter movies, plays Michael with more star swagger.

Nov 15, 2018 | Rating: 3/4 | Full Review…

A few too many side characters thrown in at once, but hopefully as the series progresses, everyone's role will become more clear. Brotherhood is off to a solid start, and I'm curious to see where it goes from here.
