Critic Consensus: In its fourth season, Californication still provides sharp satire and a vicarious outlet for viewers.

Californication: Season 4 Photos

Tv Season Info

Series 4 of the dramedy that chronicles the carnal escapades of novelist-turned-screenwriter Hank Moody (David Duchovny) begins with Hank getting bailed out of jail and discovering he's the toast of the town thanks to his involvement in the literary sex scandal. However, not all is hunky-dory for the hunky author who finds he is facing a lawsuit and that Karen (Natascha McElhone) and Becca (Madeleine Martin) want nothing to do with him. As Hank's case goes to trial, a compromising photo of him with two young ladies has the DA rethinking a plea bargain, his attorney (Carla Gugino) reconsidering him as a client and actress Sasha Bingham (Addison Timlin) reassessing her role in the movie they've been working on. After getting evicted from his place, Hank is shocked when Karen invites him to live with her and Becca. And on the series finale, Hank attends the film-kickoff party, and is surprised to see Karen with a date, and even more surprised by some news they deliver about Becca.

It was a solid season when all is said and done and I'm looking forward to the return of Mr. Hank Moody. Hopefully we won't have to wait too long.

The adult-only themes and humor are still enjoyable, but if the main character continues his unapologetic slide downwards, it's hard to see how the plot will stay compelling.

A pretty-well done and solid season so far.

Hank is without a doubt a modern day version of many tragic figures from the pages of William Shakespeare, but unlike Othello and Macbeth, Hank's story is not yet finished.

[The] once-charming contrarianism has gone utterly rancid, leaving us with the unpleasant spectacle of David Duchovny straddled repeatedly by jailbait.

If there's something constant found [here], it's the return of Californication's combination of clever writing, intriguing character development and an overdose of sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll.

The fun of Californication lies as much in watching Hank try to get his life together as it does in seeing him let it all fall apart when temptation proves to be too great to resist.

While this series' destination and journey might not aspire to high levels of sophistication, this season does feel as if it's hurtling toward something of consequence, which is more than a certain serial-killing Showtime hit can say for itself of late.

If you watch this series every week, please stop. You're just enabling it.

If you're able to get past the inconsistencies of tone, the first eight episodes of the season are still a lot of black-and-blue fun, which is to say they're darkly humorous, prolifically sexual, and purely entertaining.
