Critic Consensus: Catastrophe proves that there's still a place for simple romantic comedy on television, as long as the actors have chemistry and the jokes are laugh-out-loud funny.

[Catastrophe] has built a wickedly funny comedy around two people trying really hard, who seem to be falling in love with each other despite all logic.

Catastrophe is hilarious, dirty, quick, and very satisfying-not unlike the sex lives of its protagonists.

It's a really likable romantic comedy that takes a lot of familiar material and smartens it up, gives it intimacy; it dodges all of the TV-ized clichés that can turn scripted love into a Ping -Pong game of witticisms and snark.

The funniest sequence by far was a painful dinner party towards the end in which Sharon and Rob found mutual solace in hating someone else... In the face of a common enemy suddenly two people spouting bawdy one-liners became a couple.

It is side-splittingly honest: About love, anger, attraction, aging, pregnancy, and "sex musk." It is also, not coincidentally, the finest and funniest new comedy of the year.

What's best about Catastrophe is how engaging the characters of Rob and Sharon are, and how quickly we come to root for them
