It sort of works.

Although this particular portrayal of Russia's longest-ruling female leader is refreshingly modern, viewers' appetites for a gripping and emotional period drama are likely to left unsatiated.

The series is a gorgeously detailed piece.

The crown sits easily on Mirren, who can be bossy, seductive, vindictive, and girlish at will. She's great, even when trapped in a romance novel.

Catherine The Great's storytelling never manages to equal the grandeur of its richly detailed set design; as the series unfolds, those extravagant visuals become more and more like façades from the mythical Potemkin villages.

I think there's a tight two-hour movie about Catherine the Great that could be far more entertaining or a six-hour miniseries that could be far more informative and illuminating.

The dynamic between Helen Mirren and Jason Clarke maintains the interest in a story that could have combined politics and sex with more creativity and sensuality. [Full Review in Spanish]

It pains me to admit that this show has been a slog, and I'm glad it's over...the real problem with this show is that it tries to cram roughly 30 years of history into four hour-long episodes.

Impressively detailed in costume and setting, albeit a little fuzzy in its history. Despite this, the results are riveting.

There's a lot of yelling and passionate making up, but it's all a little distant and slightly embarrassing, like watching a couple you don't know arguing in a parking lot.

Mirren will get an Emmy nod for this because she's Mirren. She is a great actress, and she's certainly good here. A pity she'll get that nod for so cramped a story.

It's a production of epic proportion, but it works so well because even its title character is scaled down to a relatable level.

You can feel that [directors] are relying on the mighty Dame Helen to do most of the dramatic heavy lifting here. You can also sense when, despite her best efforts, that particular plan of action still falls short.

Although you should watch Catherine simply to enjoy the rare reverse May-December pairings, the show isn't by any means perfect.

Helen Mirren is her usual force of nature in Catherine The Great.

The peccadilloes of royalty never go out of fashion, but Catherine -- with her tumultuous decades-long reign -- brings more intrigue to the party than most. Couple that with Mirren's presence, and Catherine the Great pretty well lives up to its name.

There's a thin line between costume-drama soap and comic-book sophomorica, and Catherine The Great practically erases it.
October 21, 2019
Catherine the Great reframes her desire as part of her glory - and revels in that glory, without asking too many awkward questions.

Stepping back from the series' four episodes reveals a disappointing lack of ambition in portraying such a titanic force's final days.

Racy, interesting and visually arresting.
