Critic Reviews for Chad Season 1
All Critics (10) | Top Critics (7) | Fresh (9) | Rotten (1)
Nasim Pedrad pulls off a bold, bizarre comedic feat in Chad.
Chad has something no other show possibly could, and that's Pedrad's unique comic style.
It suggests a large cultural burden he's failing to live up to, rather than just failing to live up to the basic standards of being a person in the world. I don't know where that show went, but I would really like to watch it.
Pedrad's vulnerable performance softens the blow of Chad's narcissism, but despite the show's creative ideas, it struggles to offset Chad's vain personality with moments of resolution or growth.
You'll laugh - but cringe - at the crass behavior of the youth inhabited by fully grown Nasim Pedrad.
Chad is funny and connoisseurs of excruciating comedy will adore it... It's weird, it's wonderful and a cult-classic is born.
Camouflaged beneath a choppy wig and oversize polo shirts, her voice pitched a half-octave lower than normal, Pedrad captures the many contradictions of early adolescence.
Chad works mainly because Pedrad doesn't treat her role as a gimmick.
Wouldn't want to be him, barely want to know him, and yet in Chad, Saturday Night Live veteran Nasim Pedrad almost makes you want to hug him - if that would stop him from being such a heartbreakingly hilarious fool.
Chad is sure to gain a cult following but it's too niche to steal the thunder of the grand poobah of uncomfortable comedy, Curb Your Enthusiasm.
Audience Reviews for Chad: Season 1

16h agoCan I give it a zero star? The concept is totally unclear, the lead is a female and is trying to act as a boy. Is the character trans? If so, are you making a mockery of the trans community?

2d agoCongratulations TBS, you found a worse (and unfunnier) show than "Full Frontal with Samantha Bee". I had to watch the pilot to see why an adult woman would play a young teen... its as creepy and insulting as the commercials, plus it wasn't funny at all. I'm sure TBS will carry it for two or three years since it pleases the liberal audience it aims for, but this show is HORRIBLE.

2d agoWhen the critics are at 90% and the general public is at 25%, you know something is rotten. I watched the first episode, and that'll be the last. A 40 year old women playing a 14 year old boy is creepy AF, not to mention the show is just terrible on almost all levels.

2d agoChad is the worst sitcom (if you can call it a sitcom) that I have ever seen. It was disturbing, awkward, stupid, creepy and unfunny! Not that it would have made the show any better, but why not just have a teenage boy play the role? Nasim Pedrad cannot pull this off. Chad still sounds like a female when he/she talks and looks like one in bad clothes. You can't hide that with fake thick eyebrows. The sex scene was very cringe inducing. This is a horrible show! A middle-aged woman playing a male kid ain't cool. Please end this tragedy now and take this crap off the air.

2d ago40-year-old female creator/actress is playing the role of a 14-year-old boy, its obvious she is a she and that she is 3 times the age she is trying to play. looks creepy her interacting with kids trying to "act" like one.

2d agoThis show is the first laugh out loud comedy in a long time. It feels like a new, fresh "Strangers with Candy". We love it!

3d agoI don't know who I'm their right mind green lighted this show. Awkwardly horrible, horribly awkward, it's just not believable. It's difficult to imagine a grown woman playing the role of a 14yr old horny male. It's like they stole the idea from American Dad. It comes off as so horribly desperate. I tried I really did, I got through half of the pilot & changed it over to the golf channel.. and I hate golf.

3d agoI gave this 1/2 of a star because I couldn't rate it any lower. I saw how much this show was being promoted and thought the commercials/previews weren't funny at all, but decided to watch the first episode to give it a shot. To say this show is incredibly creepy and horribly not funny is an understatement. To start, you have a 40 year old woman staring as a 14 year old boy who in the show looks like a 30 something soccer mom from the early 90's... nobody who can actually see would think that "Chad" is a 14 year old male... Nobody! The only thing that makes this less believable is when Chad talks! Literally no 14 year old kids talk, look or think like Chad... it is essentially what a 40 year old woman thinks a 14 year old boy would act; well, if that 40 year old woman had never met a 14 year old boy anyway! Not only is the main character ridiculously unbelievable, the entire storyline is just plain disturbing. To sum it up... a 40 year old woman is playing a 14 year old child who spends the entire show trying to have sex. This all culminates with this 14 year old child going to have sex with another child with the last segment essentially being a date rape scenario. Oh, and when the character playing the Mother finds out about this date rape she basically says that she hopes it doesn't happen again. Yeah... date rape... this "SITCOM" about children is hilarious!!! How Chad ever got the green light is baffling... but not as baffling as the Hollywood critics giving this a 90% rating saying how great it is. One would think this show would be canceled by the end of the month, but I'm sure it will get renewed for another 5 seasons. My recommendation... if you have the option between watching Chad and spending 6 months in a medieval torture chamber in Siberia... I hear Siberia is nice this time of year!

3d agoThe main problem with Chad is that it isn't funny.Life is too short.Pass.
-
3d agoAt a time when everyone in Hollywood is demanding authenticity in the casting of actors, why wasn't an actual 14 year old boy cast as the lead? Both the lead performance and the characters FX make-up have created a new kind of Uncanny Valley that makes this already poorly written show that much harder to sit through.
