What to Know

Critics Consensus

Champions doesn't quite live up to its creators' comedic reputations, but a charming cast and good-natured approach to sensitive issues make it a worthwhile watch.

Daniel D'Addario TIME Magazine 05/30/2018
The mix of precociousness and real-kid energy brought to mind Lisa Simpson-with a dose of freewheeling energy that's perfect for a moment at which out queer kids are more visible than ever. Go to Full Review

With a little adjustment, "Champions" could be fantastic. The exceptionally diverse cast brings a lot to the table, and the writing is smart and fresh. But right now it's a bit too disjointed to be a complete success. Go to Full Review

Champions is a promising comedy, one that doesn't arrive quite as fully formed as recent NBC gems like The Good Place or Great News, but that offers enough funny moments and bright spots to place it squarely in the good category. Go to Full Review

Skip it after episode three... Overall, the pilot was not funny, but there were some laugh-out-loud moments that made me see the potential it has to be something funny. Go to Full Review

In Michael, 'Champions' boasts the rare gay lead character of color on a network TV show...It's a show with a lot of heart and sharp sense of humor. Go to Full Review

We're hoping Kaling and Grandy get things together faster than they did on The Mindy Project. We don't think NBC is going to give them the same amount of time to figure out what the show is that Fox gave to Mindy. Go to Full Review

05/17/2022 Terrible, You can't go 1 second without knowing they're gay, they have nothing else to say. The humor is very unfunny See more 07/03/2021 On paper, with writers like Mindy Kaling (The Office) and comedian Anders Holms (Workaholics), this show should be a success. Sadly, however, Champions is a by-the-book sitcom. It follows all the typical formulas. If you liked shows like Big Bang Theory or 2 Broke Girls, then you might like this show. But if you are looking for original writing, interesting characters, or good laughs - you won't find any here. See more 03/24/2020 This show is terrible - it's so bad I've gone to the effort of setting up an RT account after all these years of using it. I have loved everything Mindy Kaling has done and thought this would be a sure fire winner. Instead, it's tired, clichéd hackneyed excuse for comedy based on the fact there's a camp gay kid within a gym environment. Please don't waste your time, I'm never going to get the time back after watching 3 episodes (I couldn't believe it would continue being so bad - it does) See more 09/25/2019 Was looking for a fun show - but omg, was this bad. Not only was the acting horrible but the plot! Who writes stuff like that and thinks it's funny? Other than stereotypes there were no plausible characters that I could even remotely relate to. DISAPPOINTED See more 04/19/2019 So funny and good!! Please renew for season 2!! :( See more 10/30/2018 Kind of stupid but in a fun way. Love Michael. See more Read all reviews
