Champions: Season 1 (2018)

Season 1

Critics Consensus

Champions doesn't quite live up to its creators' comedic reputations, but a charming cast and good-natured approach to sensitive issues make it a worthwhile watch.

Surprisingly, it's a co-creation of Mindy Kaling and Charlie Grandy, who also worked together on The Office and The Mindy Project. So quite a bit better was expected from the three episodes made available for review.

Good-natured, eager to please and not as funny as its pedigree says it should be.

The mix of precociousness and real-kid energy brought to mind Lisa Simpson-with a dose of freewheeling energy that's perfect for a moment at which out queer kids are more visible than ever.

With a little adjustment, "Champions" could be fantastic. The exceptionally diverse cast brings a lot to the table, and the writing is smart and fresh. But right now it's a bit too disjointed to be a complete success.

Champions is a promising comedy, one that doesn't arrive quite as fully formed as recent NBC gems like The Good Place or Great News, but that offers enough funny moments and bright spots to place it squarely in the good category.

It's easy to admire Champions for its low-pressure progressive streak, which starts with its biracial gay teenage leading character and carries through the races, religions and sexual orientations of the other category with a "No big deal" shrug.

Skip it after episode three... Overall, the pilot was not funny, but there were some laugh-out-loud moments that made me see the potential it has to be something funny.

In Michael, 'Champions' boasts the rare gay lead character of color on a network TV show...It's a show with a lot of heart and sharp sense of humor.

We're hoping Kaling and Grandy get things together faster than they did on The Mindy Project. We don't think NBC is going to give them the same amount of time to figure out what the show is that Fox gave to Mindy.

Great gags, fun characters on inclusive sitcom throwback.

The end result is still often yawn-inducingly standard-even if the pieces getting us there aren't.

The most winning midseason comedy - at least until the still-unscheduled return of Trial & Error - looks to be Champions.

This show is terrible - it's so bad I've gone to the effort of setting up an RT account after all these years of using it. I have loved everything Mindy Kaling has done and thought this would be a sure fire winner. Instead, it's tired, clichéd hackneyed excuse for comedy based on the fact there's a camp gay kid within a gym environment. Please don't waste your time, I'm never going to get the time back after watching 3 episodes (I couldn't believe it would continue being so bad - it does)

Was looking for a fun show - but omg, was this bad. Not only was the acting horrible but the plot! Who writes stuff like that and thinks it's funny? Other than stereotypes there were no plausible characters that I could even remotely relate to. DISAPPOINTED

Kind of stupid but in a fun way. Love Michael.

This series really grew on me, Lots of exciting characters that bring new dynamics and jokes to what should feel incredibly stale. Such a great cast, and I wish there was a second season to see how it would grow even further.

Amazing so disappointing that it’s been cancelled ?? waiting for season 2 to be picked up

Lgbtq awareness Is important in today’s intolerant world and i praIse the show’s creators for spreading this AWARENESS , but There’s something about this kid that makes this show virtually unwatchable for me. I cant help but cringe.

A good pass time. Each episode is about 20 minutes, so not a lot of time invested.
