The Charmed Ones -- better known as Prue, Piper, and Phoebe Halliwell (Shannen Doherty, Holly Marie Combs, Alyssa Milano), continue to perform various acts of benevolent witchcraft gleaned from the "Book of Shadows" as Charmed begins its third season. In the opening episode, Prue and Phoebe witness an attack on their friend Inspector Morris (Dorian Gregory) by a murderer who has been possessed by demons. But when time comes for the girls to offer evidence against the attacker, they refuse to do so, sworn to secrecy by their vows as witches. This brings Prue and Phoebe into the office of new Assistant District Attorney Cole Turner (Julian McMahon in his first series appearance) -- who, as it turns out, has a hidden agenda all his own. Meanwhile, third Halliwell sister Piper may have spent too much time in the realm of the Whitelighters with her guardian angel (and sweetheart) Leo Wyatt (Brian Krause). Barenaked Ladies make a musical appearance at P3, the Halliwell girls' nightclub.

The Halliwell girls come to the aid of Christopher (Michael Dietz), a young man who is cursed to spend 12 hours each day in the form of an owl -- while his sweetheart Brooke (Elisabeth Harnois) is likewise cursed to spend 12 hours each night in the form of a wolf. Also, Prue and Phoebe Halliwell (Shannen Doherty, Alyssa Milano) must try to find a way that their sister, Piper (Holly Marie Combs), can marry the girls' Whitelighter, Leo (Brian Krause), without incurring the wrath of Leo's superiors. Making things more difficult, both tasks must be completed within the next 24 hours!

Angered over the likelihood that her Whitelighter lover, Leo (Brian Krause), will not be allowed to marry her, "Charmed One" Piper (Holly Marie Combs) goes on strike, refusing to use her supernatural powers under any circumstances. Piper's recalcitrance could not come at a worse time: her sisters, Phoebe (Alyssa Milano) and Prue (Shannen Doherty), currently have their hands full trying to help a little girl named Kate (Rachel David), who has been targeted for persecution by trolls who have taken over the kingdom of a fairy princess in Kate's care. And as if that wasn't enough trouble, the demi-demon Cole (Julian McMahon) is planning to steal the sisters' all-important "Book of Shadows."

Amazingly enough, this episode marks the only time that Halloween has been celebrated on Charmed. During a Halloween party at the manor, the Halliwell girls are hurtled back to the year 1670 by a time vortex. Upon arriving the past, the girls learn they have been assigned to save an unborn baby from morphing into an evil witch. Meanwhile, back in the present, Leo (Brian Krause) and Daryl (Dorian Gregory) must do battle against a passel of deadly Grimlocks without the aid of the Halliwells' magic.

Already nervous over the likelihood that a demon has been sent back in time to end the Halliwell family line before it begins, Prue (Shannen Doherty) is further burdened by the mystery of an unknown intruder who has broken all the mirrors in the Halliwell mansion. Meanwhile, the demi-demon Cole (Julian McMahon) incurs the wrath of the Triad with his seeming inability to destroy the Halliwells. And Piper (Holly Marie Combs) suspects that divine intervention may have something to do with the fact that she can't spend any quality time with her guardian angel, Leo (Brian Krause).

While trying to help a poor, tortured soul named Father Thomas (Harry Groener), Prue (Shannen Doherty) is unwillingly transformed into an "empath," forcing her to feel and experience all the pain in the world. To rid herself of this "gift," Prue must locate the demon responsible for making empaths out of both Father Thomas and herself. Elsewhere, Piper (Holly Marie Combs) begins to wonder if she and Leo (Brian Krause) are truly right for each other. And Phoebe (Alyssa Milano) cannot understand why Cole (Julian McMahon) is spurning her affections.

On orders from the Triad, Cole (Julian McMahon) steps up his efforts to destroy the Halliwell girls. To this end, Cole teams up with another demon named Andras (Jason Carter), who has the power to convert mere anger into blind rage. The plan is to exploit the Halliwells' habitual petty arguments and turn the girls violently against one another -- a plan that succeeds beyond expectation, rendering the girls utterly powerless. The question: will Cole finish the job before his "human" side overwhelms his "demon" side?

Now aware that Cole (Julian McMahon) is actually the demon Belthazor -- or rather, the "Belthazor" side of his personality is stronger than his "human" side -- Prue (Shannen Doherty) and Piper (Alyssa Milano) join forces with bounty hunter Krell (Scott McDonald), determined to destroy Cole before he destroys them. Meanwhile, Phoebe (Holly Marie Combs), still unaware of Cole's dual personality, tries to find him after he disappears from view. The climax of the episode finds Phoebe taking drastic measures to save Cole from her relentless sisters.

Forsworn to destroy the Halliwell girls, the evil spirit Terra (Paige Rowland) goes about her business by entering the bodies of innocent mortals, killing them one by one after they have served their purpose. Meanwhile, the P3 club becomes the site of Piper's ten-year high school reunion -- an occasion of great anxiety for Piper (Holly Marie Combs), who was far from her school's prettiest and most popular student. Inevitably, Terra shows up at the reunion and enters Piper's body -- whereupon Prue (Shannen Doherty) and Phoebe (Alyssa Milano) must figure out a way to vanquish the malevolent spirit without killing their own sister!

Prue (Shannen Doherty) is unable to shake a tune that keeps playing in her head. Investigating this irritating phenomenon, Prue discovers that the tune is the one played on an ice-cream wagon -- and that the ice-cream vendor is methodically kidnapping little kids and transporting them to a magical alternate dimension, ruled over by the hideous, omnivorous Nothing. Meanwhile, Prue's sister Piper (Holly Marie Combs) discovers that her father, Victor (now played by James Read, taking over from Tony Denison), is somewhere in town. As it turns out, it is Victor who ends up saving the Halliwell girls from the abducted children -- who are nowhere near the "innocent victims" they appear to be.

Prue's death was handled badly and essentially off-screen, and remained a shadow over the show for the rest of its five years.

Favorite show of all time! Love it. Wish they would do a reboot with the original cast and not the garbage that they just released.
