Chewing Gum

Critics Consensus

Deftly juggling its Christian convictions and crude intentions, Chewing Gum is balanced by a brazen performance from series creator Michaela Cole.

Critic Reviews for Chewing Gum Season 1

All Critics (13) | Top Critics (4)

Chewing Gum is a concentrated burst of life and colour that's a far cry from the stereotypical bleak portrayal of social housing in so-called "gritty" dramas.

The underrated gem is worth a watch.

Like all the best comedy writers, Michaela Coel, who also stars, has a knack for taking an everyday situation and spinning it with the absurd.

The real treat of Chewing Gum is Cole herself, whose demeanor, humor, and fabulous, expressive face make the show what it is.

There's something about the everyday locations that make the outrageous melodrama all the better.

Jan 15, 2019 | Full Review…

Michaela Coel's comedy about the awkward extremes of spirituality, sex, and relationships is much like its main character - proudly and loudly its own confusing thing.

Dec 19, 2017 | Full Review…

She's crude, confused and deeply human. If ever there was a show that deserved a second series, it was this.

Nov 28, 2017 | Full Review…

This is not a performance. This is a tour de force. Probably the most liberated series in the history of television. Never in my lifetime have I seen something so sexually subversive, irreverent, condescending, colorful and fun.

Nov 28, 2017 | Full Review…

Given that Michaela Coel's incredible timing, warmth and gift for physical comedy basically make her, in my eyes, the second coming of Lucille Ball, I feel she could carry it off whatever.

Nov 28, 2017 | Full Review…

Other shows have offered similiar awkward laughter, but the sharp writing, underlying sweetness, and Coel's unique radiance makes this show something truly special.

Uma das melhores séries de comédia já feitas, sem dúvida! Explora temas atuais, sem preconceitos, como a sexualidade e outros tabus.

Second time watching, Love this show.

Funny show, subtitles barely can keep up with the dialog, needs a laugh track to make time for the next line.

I cant figure it out why this piece of s**t has 5 stars. Unbelievable. Most scenes are just lame, and the humor and the jokes are just too improvised. This is the worst thing I've seen, I cant believe there are so many people liking this. Is like, the writters came up with the dialogues while taking a sh*t in the rest room and then they came out saying: Well, we have our tv show finished!

Dying to see another season of rhis show! It's witty, upbeat but so ridiculously real. Great show!!

    Brilliant. Fantastic. And outlandishly truthful.

Delectably raunchy, and sweetly crass, Chewing Gum is a very binge-worthy Brit series, and one that should particularly appeal to those that like female-driven sex comedies like Insecure and Fleabag. Star/creator Michaela Coel makes for an indelible character in Tracey, whose mis-adventures are funny and relevant for anyone that's stepped out of their comfort zone during their 20s. Backed up by some really pretty decor that gives the series an indie-90s feel, Chewing Gum is also very pleasing on the eyes, as it is to one thoughts. Perhaps a mite bit overwrought at times, and it doesn't entirely capitalize on its interracial themes, but for the most part Chewing Gum had an exemplary first season here, and it clearly found it's voice rather quickly.

It's great... but wtf... 6 episodes. What kind of bullshit is this? At least do 8. How half ass to put it out with only 6 episodes. And no great season finally to top. Just like cutting a movie half way.

A virgin? In England, the country of sexual revolution? About as believable as Sorrentino's Young Pope who smokes. Plus, the looks of Michaela don't help. I thought I would enjoy a series starring a "non conventional beauty" (like Lena Dunham) but unfortunately I didn't.
