Critic Reviews for Citizen Rose Season 1

All Critics (20) | Top Critics (13)

As Hollywood continues to grapple with allegations of sexual harassment and assault, Citizen Rose shows a woman trying to fight back by speaking up and encouraging others to find their voices, which is a pretty powerful message.

Citizen Rose, a precursor to the upcoming reality series airing later this spring on E!, is a defiantly raw and personal portrait of a very intense time in Rose McGowan's life.

Jan 31, 2018 | Full Review…

Some of [Rose's] theatricality is surely innate-once upon a time, she wanted to be an actress-but some of it is a survival strategy: She is still putting herself back together again, one bold self-affirmation at a time.

It's important to note that nothing in Citizen Rose feels self-congratulatory, even as the premiere matter-of-factly chronicles the avalanche of accusations that poured out post-Weinstein.

Dec 14, 2018 | Full Review…

The very things that make Citizen Rose an unstable, claustrophobic, occasionally self-indulgent movie also make it an excellent window in what it's like for a person to be distorted by sexual violence and objectification.

I suppose McGowan's critique of Time's Up as a cynical PR fix could apply to Citizen Rose. There's a difference of intent here, though: hers isn't to smooth away the rough edges of this moment as red-carpet solidarity might, but to call attention to them.

The resulting two hours of truth-telling is probably more sincere than anything E! has ever aired.

Disappointingly, it often rang more #Me than #MeToo.

There is no perfect activist. There is no blueprint for this watershed moment, the likes of which we have never seen before.

Trauma, healing explored in imperfect, powerful documentary.

Feb 6, 2018 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

Rose McGowan on E!... It's a strange place to find a documentary by a shaven-headed women's rights activist, given that its purpose seems to be to show women as disgustingly trivial, vain, slutty and venal.

Citizen Rose isn't perfect, but it succeeds in one of the primary goals of the #MeToo movement: making women feel less alone.
