Critics Consensus

Community unfurls into a marvel of meta-madness in its sophomore season, artfully deconstructing sitcom tropes while repeatedly knocking its own emotional beats out of the park.

As probably many others before me, I was advised to watch this show and also as others before me it took me a while to get immersed into it and sure enough season 1 was amazing to make me watch the entire show, however no one prepared me for the mess and chaos that would come of it. The first seasons are indeed a ground breaking achievement for sitcoms, with so many surfacing throughout the years, Community stands out with its original writing style, meta comments, insane amount of movie / TV references and of course it did made me laugh to the point of tears sporadically which is no small feat! I finished watching it by the time I am making this review so you can see that I didn't accompany the full on drama that haunted this production but I investigated about it since it became clear the downfall that the series was taking. The best about the show is the amount of TV and movie references it does, which for someone that loves the art it's a treat, and the peak of Community episodes are the ones that completely shift the writing style and they adapt it to whatever genre they are depicting (horror, western, spy movie, among others) also it goes without saying that Troy and Abed as duo are probably the best comedy pair across all sitcoms I've seen. Now for the bad... even in its prime there were some plots that threw me off a lot, the one that for me keeps ruining the show throughout is Britta, mostly because they made this character so ridiculously dumb and so annoying, that every single time she shows on screen I cringed, it's awful the decision they made to change her to what she becomes, and it bothered me for the whole show, also Jeff and Annie being a thing is so awkward with the age difference, the writers were just navigating for a love story there (and yes don't get me started on Britta and Troy).. And of course the many elephants in the room and the reasons why the show should've ended in season 4: - Pierce which was one of the funniest characters, was portrayed by Chevy Chase who seemed to constantly have erratic behaviors on set to the point of leaving the show due to his clash with the creator. - Troy leaving the show to pursue other personal projects, Donald and Chevy being core characters caused irreparable damage - With those two exits the creators had one perfect episode to serve as the ending: the one where Jeff and Pierce graduate, if it ended there this would be a 10/10 - Season 4 might be considered the worst for many people, not for me, season 6 is terrible, the writers desperately tried to reinvent the show, they made it darker some times, a lot of random comedy going on, unlikable new characters, overall and simply put, unfunny. - And the finale... I mean is one thing to be meta, another to exhaust the concept, we get it you are a self aware TV show and the most meta thing would be to recognize you were amazing until the 4th season where 2 core characters disappeared and you desperately wanted the show to keep running. No one says it's easy to manage actors, dealing with production companies that only see dollars, but I mean if you are such a good writer you should know to work with what you get, Dan even admitted on an interview that looking bad as soon as Troy left the show was never the same, good that he realizes that but the damage is done - still the first 3 seasons are amazing and 100% worth the watch (and re-watch)

A very fun, hilarious, and weird season of the show. This is where Community reaches its greatest heights!
  • Mar 26, 2022
Season two of "Community" doubles down on the meta humor, and the paintball episodes conclude the season on a high note. Arguably improves upon the first season.

It has to be watched. It is too good.
