Complications makes for entertaining if ridiculous television - a fast-paced hospital thriller with a solid narrative, shoving cliffhanger after cliffhanger at us until, whether we like it or not, we're gagging for more.
Complications has the potential to be a gripping show that could explore social issues and personal trauma. It has a strong lead in O'Mara and an interesting enough premise but needs to get out of its own way and let the story breathe.
Complications gets more interesting episode by episode, strengthened by good supporting performances and intriguing moral questions, even if creator Matt Nix sometimes struggles to shape his individual pieces into a cohesive whole.
I'm not sure these characters are interesting or detailed enough to fill the gaps left by the absence of the cases-of-the-week, but at least Complications is aiming for something ambitiously driven by character and a serial arc.
Complications was an admirable disaster in its first two hours. It had ambition to be more than another marginal USA Network show, but the final product yielded a directionless and convoluted drama about being right... to the extreme!
If you're going to make a show that looks like Oz met Grey's Anatomy and decided to visit Mr. White for a little meth, letting the audience laugh with you, as opposed to at you, is probably a good idea.
