A bit about a clown talking above the heads of little kids? Check. A Ricky Gervais put-down? Check. Free-wheeling interviews with famous types? That's all here, all done in quintessential, quirky Conan style.
It is probably too much to say that leaving "The Tonight Show" was the best thing that could have happened to O'Brien, but it made him interesting and topical in ways that he would not have been had he stayed on NBC.
Still, there's a crucial line between self-deprecation and self-pity, and O'Brien needs to stop crossing it. He has made millions. He'll make millions. Stop crying on the national shoulder.Unlike many Americans, you've got a job. Get on with it.

Not everything worked, of course, and anyone expecting "Conan" to reinvent the wheel or drastically shake up the genre is probably disappointed. But if you were simply glad to see his brand of quirky comedy back in late night it was cause for celebration.
At times, Conan's opening night on TBS Monday felt like a very special occasion, and at other times, it felt like just another night in the long-running life of a late-night talk-show host in career transition. And maybe that's as it should be.
Conan seemed genuinely excited to be back at work and he detailed his journey of ups and downs, culminating in what he said was "the lowest low" - the discovery of a Halloween mask clearly modeled after him and titled, "Ex Talk Show Host."
