What to Know

Critics Consensus

While the characters are unevenly compelling and the overlong plotting makes these Conversations often go in circles, this adaptation retains some of the observant wisdom that made Sally Rooney's novel shine.

“The novel is better” feels like such a tired line but there is something to be said about the expansive interiority prose allows and the way a TV adaptation can reduce rather than distill such a sensibility. Go to Full Review

It’s hard not to feel worn down by the leaden seriousness that typifies so much of the talk here, whether it’s about love, friendship, identity, politics or even literature. Go to Full Review

On the one hand, it’s pitch-perfect: every line rings true. On the other, it’s almost decadently listless. Go to Full Review

I wish Conversations with Friends was better, both as a standalone show and as a literary adaptation. Go to Full Review

Normal People was a stellar adaptation of its source material, but Conversations with Friends transcended the book it was based upon. Go to Full Review

andyth55 T @AndyTh55 01/21/2025 'Normal People' was always going to be a tough act to follow and whilst I loved 'Conversations with Friends' and especially Alison Oliver's beautiful performance, I found the adaptation meandered a little too much at times. Having said that, the script and the filming were quite wonderful and I would recommend it. See more Zoe A @RT92577320 11/25/2024 Read the book over a year ago. Was tasked with making annotations in my friends copy so they could read them as they went through the book. Forced me to be analytical and engaged in the writing. The book even more so than the show follows Frances's perspective and i believe i became increasingly biased. Upon conversations with friends about the book my biggest flaw was Rooneys bias to her female leading character and how little at least me as a reader personally was able to critique her actions. The show however did allow me this. Despite it not being necessarily ground breaking, the TV show allowed us to view the interworkings between all the different charchters more collectively (such is the natuture of cinema where shots and angles portray points of view a book might not be able to). Frances was more obviously flawed in this adaptation and at times an unlikeable protagonist. I felt more able to fault her and question her morals. If you have read the book, i would highly recommend giving it a watch. If you have not, then make sure an early twenties, love cube, queer, zoom into the innerworkings of relationships is something your intrigued by. If you are in your twenties-thirties, hopefully you will fell seen by the two young female leads. See more Alison L @RT59441604 08/12/2023 I think the TV adaptation really elevates the book. I absolutely hated the characters in the book but when I saw the adaptation and how relatable the characters were, I revisited the text. I think the production was excellent - sound design, production design, editing, and the performances by the cast were wonderful. Alison Oliver was a real discovery and I-had only seen Joe Alwyn in the Favourite and needed to look him up - I really enjoyed his nuanced performance (No I didn't know who Taylor Swift was). Great to see Kerry Fox back on screen. All round enjoyable. (And no pls don't compare Rooney's second book, Normal People to CWF) See more Natacha B @RT82239068 07/11/2023 Very engaging and original. Zero cliches, good acting, excellent chemistry. A very particular view of life to make you think. An unexpected little jewel. I love the way they represented introverted people. See more Cary G @RT91431158 03/01/2023 While watching the first three episodes I was having a sense of deja vu. Then it came to me. So many of the tropes appeared in Normal People. The relationship that is concealed from others. Check. The story takes place at Trinity College. Check. They characters vacation in an exotic location. Check. Unfortunately the pacing is painfully slow. Give it a try if you're having difficulty falling asleep. See more Diane B @BklynWriter 08/27/2022 It was kind of like watching a derivative version Normal People with less chemistry, less attractive characters, and less of a compelling narrative. The main actress is woefully miscast. Nothing about her character felt believable or compelling. See more Read all reviews
