Because while there is certainly great, emotional drama to be mined from a show that overturns wrongful convictions and perhaps makes a larger social commentary about the state of the justice system, Conviction sadly isn't it.

... I am also reminded, and not in a good way, of the short-lived ABC series Equal Justice...

Bang bang -- you're bored.

If you're a fan of procedurals with sex appeal, you can do much, much worse. Atwell's Hayes Morrison is immediately appealing.

In a just world, Conviction would not be as witless as it is ridiculous, nor would it saddle its usually appealing British star with a clipped and erratic American accent that strangles her line readings and her charm. But it is and it does.

Conviction has a flashy style and a sarcastic manner, but underneath, there's a conventional show with a sentimental streak.

You get the feeling that ABC offered her (Hayley Atwell) Conviction as a consolation prize, and not a great one, either.

Conviction is a little bit like letting your toddler dress herself for school. Many of the pieces of the ensemble are great, but when you put them together, all you can see is a messy jumble, and the bad things distract from the good.

A paint-by-numbers procedural reaching for a bit of Scandal's glitz.

The plot is ridiculous, the writing is bad and Atwell seems embarrassed to be there.

Television's efforts to wring every possible permutation out of the crime-and-punishment genre results in another bland series with Conviction.

Conviction can't quite commit to the potential of its own anti-hero.

Conviction is so into overkill, it's hard to tell what to take seriously. Maybe Atwell has that same feeling about this lame procedural consolation prize for ABC's failure to establish her better vehicle Agent Carter.

Atwell's performance is solid enough, particularly when Armstrong is around for badgering purposes. But the weekly skirmishes with "The System" end in ways that at best strain credulity.

Conviction is a classic example of network TV misusing talent and falling back on tired templates for prime-time drama.

The pilot makes use of a pig's carcass to solve the crime. The show's only surprise is that, given that it's ABC, no one thought to put lipstick on it.

Judging from the premiere episode, Conviction is not just compelling and topical, it's a master class in TV-series construction.

Let this be said with conviction -- don't waste your time here.

The cast has to shine, and it only flickers. And the obnoxious-but-brilliant leader story has seen better days.
