MacFarlane and his partners have kept their eyes on the value of the material. They have created something that arouses wonderment, despite the fact that it's airing in prime time, in front of mainstream viewers.

It's all done with brilliant imagery and crisp production that differs from Sagan's primarily because the technology just keeps getting better. Where MacFarlane's Cosmos resembles Sagan's completely is its passionate embrace of science.

The original seemed to flow better and had a finer dramatic touch. The newer has the advantages of modern visual technology -- it's spectacular in high-definition -- and of course contains more current scientific knowledge.

A wonderful journey, with astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson doing a fine job of explaining the workings of the universe, from the sub-atomic level out to the very edge of the cosmos.

Thankfully Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey is grounded in science, not pseudoscience, and finally we have something epic to tell the tale to a new generation.

Rebooting Carl Sagan's original series, Cosmos: A Personal Voyage from 1980, with Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey is an interesting idea. Unfortunately, the execution doesn't match the concept.

Cosmos is evidence that there is room for blockbuster style science programming that interprets scientific research into malleable concepts -- a wonderful gift of knowledge to anyone who watches it.

Cosmos is generating debate and attracting a moderate number of viewers, but its greatest strength comes from its potential to spark an interest in science in children who will grow up to pursue it as a career.

Its intended value seems one of education as well as entertainment, and Tyson does a good job of combining both with his thoughtful, but passionate countenance.

Jul 2, 2020 | Full Review…

While some of the effects in Cosmos are really quite innovative, there's an old-school feeling here. I've always loved scientific educational programs from the '80s, and Cosmos feels sort of wholesome and almost quaint.
