The series, created by the team behind the documentary Weiner, is ostensibly about untangling romantic relationships, but its lessons hold up whether or not you have a mate.

Couples Therapy breaks new ground with its camera, capturing the stalemates and breakthroughs in shifting gazes, unsaid interjections, raised eyebrows.

And, yes, while a show like this smacks of voyeurism, its view into the therapy processes of couples in counseling with Dr. Orna Guralnik over six months is instructive as opposed to exploitative.

While the Showtime series may inspire some visits to couples' therapists offices, I think it will mostly help destigmatize a process that usually occurs behind closed doors.

Sometimes you are tempted to laugh at the show's participants, as in the above example, but then you realize that these are just normal people exposing their most intimate thoughts.

Couples Therapy also delivers on a fantasy familiar to anyone who's been in therapy of any kind, joint or solo, following Guralnik out of her own workplace and into that of her clinical adviser, Dr. Virginia Goldner.

Guralnik is a picture of cool, even when a patient is staring her down and doubting her magnanimousness. If she's not magnanimous, she's at least remarkably wise, routinely saying things that viewers may find useful

The reveals are somewhat slow, something anyone who's been through therapy themselves will not find surprising - but the breakthroughs are illuminating.

Audience Reviews for Couples Therapy: Season 1

Riveting and thought provoking. Touched me to my core. I saw so much of myself and my spouse in some of the couples. There was such consolation to see the things you go through behind closed doors being played out in front of you by other people. My heart goes out to the bravery of each couple for sharing their beautiful and unique stories.

This does not feel authentic. If it was a real documentary, there would be realness. For those of us who practice in this profession, you know what I am talking about. I wish I could obtain continuing ed credits for watching this. Same waste of time as the majority of those paid experiences.

I've never seen anything quite like it! I feel like I learned how to communicate within my own relationships better. Can't wait for season 2!

My husband and I watched this and I felt like we resolved so many of our issues off the bat. What a unique show and has great practical implications.

Well written and well acted. I was blown away when one character asked another to name her favorite band's worst album. Pause. I thought of my favorite act, Bonnie Raitt's last Warner Brother's LP, "Nine Lives'", which really sucked in about 1980. Then on the show, came the answer: Bonnie Raitt's most recent album, 2017's "dig in deep", which I have to admit is not one of my favorites, still, I don't think whoever selected this has ever listened to "Nine lives". It was strange that they nailed the artist, though. Kudos . I enjoy the show.

Imagine making a documentary with a SJW written script.

Just like when I watch HGTV I become convinced I can remodel my entire house, I was hooked and convinced I could fix or end all these couples within 10 mins of the first episode. This show is amazing. It's watching people in their most private, vulnerable moments and it's gut wrenching. And spellbinding. And the therapist is amazing. I want her to counsel me!
