SEASON:

TOMATOMETER

Critic Consensus: Crash attempts to tackle provocative social issues, but it's ultimately stymied by its thin characters, absurd plotting, and heavy-handed preachiness.

Tv Season Info

The Best Picture Oscar-winning film cruises to cable in Season 1 of this compelling dramatic series. It's a collection of polyglot profiles of all walks of ethnic Los Angelenos that also features another creepily charismatic turn by Dennis Hopper, who plays a poetic, proselytizing psychotic record producer in the middle of a "fallow period" of creativity. Other prominent characters include more dirty, corrupt, adulterous, conflicted cops than you can shake a nightstick at, and a boiling-over melting pot of troubled citizenry.

On the whole, I'd rather watch my car overheat in rush hour traffic.

With six separate storylines following characters not in the movie, Crash could become a complicated serial.

Crash, based on the Oscar-winning movie, is a show that's madly in love with its own daring and importance.

Unless Crash the show improves rapidly, it'll just provide more fuel for the people angered that the movie beat out Brokeback Mountain and Munich for the big prize.

Oct 17, 2008 | Full Review…

The cast does the best they can with the material, but considering how unbelievable the writing is, there's little they can do to lessen the feeling that we're watching a soap opera with nice production values, plus nudity and swearing.

Crash, based upon the Oscar-winning movie, won't prompt much rubbernecking.

Oct 17, 2008 | Full Review…

At once schematic and preachy, it never indicates the stakes - either for its "diverse" players or for you.

Oct 17, 2008 | Rating: 4/10 | Full Review…

Leaves you wondering if the whole setup might not simply work better as a movie.

Oct 17, 2008 | Full Review…

It's possible that Crash will end up saying something interesting about racism, cops, housewives, or Los Angeles. But I doubt it.

Oct 17, 2008 | Full Review…

Given the uneven ride, high gas prices are about the only incentive to stay home and, er, bump into it.
