Ted and Mary

Episode Info

The title "Ted and Mary" may evoke the classic comedy of The Mary Tyler Moore Show, but it actually refers to guest stars Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen, who play themselves. Larry (Larry David) and his wife Cheryl (Cheryl Hines) are developing a friendship with the celebrity couple, which is jeopardized by Larry's burgeoning crush on Mary. After an evening of bowling, Larry is dismayed to find that another patron has taken home his shoes, and asks the manager of the bowling alley to contact him immediately if the shoe thief returns. Ted and Mary mention that they have tickets to a Paul Simon concert that weekend, and ask Larry and Cheryl to join them. That night at home, Larry goes on and on to Cheryl about how wonderful Mary is, but complains about Ted asking him personal hygiene questions. He also mentions Ted's overuse of the word "heaven." "The parking space is heaven," Larry mocks him, "It's all heaven!" The next morning, Larry calls Mary, and, claiming that he loves to shop, invites himself along to go shopping at Barney's with her and her mother. At the store, he's so eager to please Mary that he buys the same sweater she's wearing. He also orders a pair of hard-to-find shoes, to replace the ones that were stolen. Larry lives to regret the excursion, as he inadvertently insults Mary's mother. He also ends up getting his old shoes back, which results in an angry confrontation with an outraged Barney's sales clerk.
