Oct 14, 2021I like Jamie Foxx but it must be the script it's not scripted good. The actors can act but this is like one of those old race movies that's poorly scripted but the actors are giving it all they got . I'm writing this while it's on so it's not engrossing at all

Jun 16, 2021DSEM is a sitcom loosely based on the real-life relationship between Jamie Fox and his daughter. My only hope is that their real-life relationship is nowhere near as disastrous. The show stars Jamie Fox as the heir to his late mothers cosmetic empire in Atlanta . Foxx plays Brian Dixon, the stereotypical playboy, manchild forced to change his ways when his daughter is unexpectedly thrust into his life after the passing of his daughter's mother. The pilot episode sets the tone for what is to come; a collage of broad, slapstick humor laced with failed attempts at storyline which are meant to provide some type of socially conscious subtext to the flawed storyline. It's as if a handful of writer were held hostage in a room and told to write random punch lines for Foxx to deliver which he unfortunately does with the comedic timing of a stand up comic coming out of retirement after a 20 year hiatus. As if the writing and broad, slapstick humor (a term used quite loosely) weren't enough to deter giving this series any serious playtime beyond the opening credits (which is still far too much) the constant breaking of the fourth wall and random cues to the supporting cast to drop whatever they're doing (which is admittedly never much) to sing, dance, or deliver lines in unison are enough to turn off the television all together and go read a good book. The supporting cast which consists of the legendary David Alan Grier who plays Foxx's father Pops Dixon is not even enough to save this show. The acting is over the top and dare I say cartoonish MOST of the time - most notable from actor Jonathan Kite who plays a cop and Foxx's best friend Johnny Williams on the show. There is absolutely nothing believable about his on again/off again romantic relationship with actress Porscha Coleman who plays Foxx's sister Chelsea Dixon who along with Grier's character lives with Foxx. The relationship between the cast and these two in particular are reminiscent of my Senior year in High School -- no Chemistry. Valente Rodriguez's character Manny who plays the stereotypical Hispanic Landscaper/Handy man would be downright offensive if I were able to take any of this series serious enough to be angry. The attempts to address serious issues like online bullying and police brutality are epic fails from every perspective. Even as a fan of David Alan Grier and Jamie Foxx for both his film and music career I came into this with very low expectations, but it seems as though my expectations were not low enough. From the writing, to the casting, to the production design and laugh tracks obviously inserted for nostalgia sake, There is absolutely nothing redeemable about this sitcom. It in fact makes me question who over at Netflix heard the pitch for this show and decided it was worthy of the green light. Perhaps in the current politically and racially charged climate with calls for diversity and equal representation, someone felt they were doing the right thing, however, as an African-American man living in these times I can say with no equivocation, this show has set us back at least 50 years.

Jun 01, 2021The show started out funny in episode one, but in episode two they completely disrespected Yoga by making it about Christianity and pushing religious themes. I was totally put off by how they appropriated Hinduism so grossly. Not worth watching.

May 12, 2021All of the actors in the show are great, but the script isn't. The jokes have no punch line, the plots barely make sense, and the characters are just weird. There's this whole "gen-z" thing that they try wrapping into the show, but it doesn't work, because no one talks or acts like that. Finally, there's this whole talking-directly-to-the-camera/viewers thing that made the show even worse. I tried watching it, hoping that it would get better, but it didn't.

Apr 24, 2021There is so much potential there with great comedians on the cast, but the show's no good.
