Carvel is already making the role his own. Go to Full Review
Brad Newsome Sydney Morning Herald 11/03/2021
Lumbered with a boorish sidekick and a host of suspects played by estimable character actors and fresh-faced up-and-comers, Dalgliesh's first outing proves an absorbing bit of telly. Go to Full Review
Dorothy Rabinowitz Wall Street Journal 10/29/2021
For all their intrinsic power, these images of sudden horror are mere details compared with the storytelling that brings this series to roaring life. Go to Full Review

Carvel is doing his best to depict a lonely man who has known bereavement and disillusion, but so far Dalgliesh is failing to fire on all cylinders. Go to Full Review
Alison Rowat The Herald (Scotland) 11/12/2021
Carvel tried hard, but his Dalgliesh was just another in a long line of troubled detectives with sad back-stories. Though he did have a cracking pair of sideburns. Go to Full Review
Christopher Stevens Daily Mail (UK) 11/05/2021

What this retelling does capture is the writer's visceral evocation of murder. Death in James's world was not a game. It was brutal and violent. Go to Full Review

Stephen G @RT76499974 02/08/2025 A low-key detective series, very British upper lip in many ways. Yet the lead character in particular has a kind of depth of character, including the fact that he is grieving the recent loss of his wife and child even though that's never front and center in the series. So not a lot of action, but lots to to ponder as he tries to figure out who done it. Each "story" within the series consumes two episodes. See more Jennifer S @OhJen 01/29/2025 Boring, dark, brooding, and so slow. Have no interest in watching additional seasons. See more Wally W @heywally 01/23/2025 kept my interest . Some different stories from the norm. See more Andrei D @RT74856639 08/06/2024 The setups are very good but it rushes to get to the end See more Ted B @Movieaddicted 05/02/2024 4.5 stars; PD James writes a pure mystery novel with depth. I read the entire Dalgliesh series, and thoroughly enjoyed each one. I was disappointed when I heard there was going to be a TV series based on the novels. What I didn't know was what an incredible job Bertie Carvel would do in the leading role. Wow. It was like I was reading those novels again for the first time. He was the right guy for the right role. I felt the series was also well Directed with quality Production. See more Steve A @RT92021794 03/05/2024 Excellent Crime Drama...Binge it Now !
