There is “restrained” acting and then there is Bertie Carvel in Channel 5’s Dalgliesh. His performance as PD James’s poet detective Adam Dalgliesh is so delicately light-touch, if it walked across a wet beach it would scarcely leave a footprint. Go to Full Review

Crime diehards will have fun picking out the wrong ‘un from the assembled suspects and Dalgliesh works fine as a standard whodunit. Go to Full Review

It’s all almost provocatively basic, but I always enjoy Dalgliesh. It’s all down to Carvel, who keeps his performance as the widowed detective meticulously subtle, dignified and steeped in underlying melancholy. Go to Full Review

I began to feel I was not watching a crime mystery, but the dramatised social engagement diary of a rather dull man. Go to Full Review

We continue to enjoy Dalgliesh because of Bertie Carvel’s grimace-filled empathetic portrayal of Adam Dalgliesh. We just wish we had more info about the detective and somewhat more tightly-written mysteries. Go to Full Review

Steve A @RT92021794 Sep 22 Awesome Crime Drama....Binge it Now! See more Stephen G @RT76499974 02/15/2025 This show really grew on my wife and me over the course of the three seasons. We started out liking it and ended up loving it. The plots are definitely who-done-its with some twists or turns along the way that provoke interest. But the acting and characters are really the strongest suit, particularly the understated, stiff-upper-lip Bertie Carvel as Dalgliesh. You know he has lots going on underneath his reserved surface, though we only get glimpses. The various subordinates whom he works with also held our attention, particularly a female detective. The show is kind of old-fashioned in its straightforward nature - not to mention the fact that it's set in the 1970s - but that's part of its appeal and charm.
