In the fifth and final season, Patty (Glenn Close) and Ellen (Rose Byrne) are pitted against one another in two separate cases. The first involves a wrongful-death suit brought against Channing McClaren (Ryan Phillippe), the founder of a whistle-blowing Web site who's implicated in the death of a trader (Jenna Elfman) for an investment firm. In the other case, Ellen is called as a witness to testify against Patty in the custody battle with Patty's son, Michael (Zachary Booth).

If you've stuck with the series this long, you'll be happy to hear it ends on a mostly satisfying note.
The Patty Hewes story is almost over, and in Close's hands, it's still compulsively watchable.
This plotting may seem tangled on paper, but the show's time-skipping narrative is surprisingly easy to follow.
It spins a dark and compelling story that now has seemingly come down to a survival duel between two women lawyers.
Judging from the first couple episodes, this final season may be the show's strongest since the first.
There's a clear focus to these first two hours auguring what could be a truly whiz-bang finish.
If Glenn Close does not get an Emmy nomination for the series finale of Damages, the folks at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences need to relinquish their clickers.
