Tv Season Info

"Damnation" is a period drama based on an actual Iowa farmers' strike in the 1930s. The story centers on Seth Davenport (Killian Scott), an eloquent preacher who stirs up farmers in a small Iowa town into holding a strike against the banks threatening to foreclose their lands. The situation seems stacked against the farmers, however: The media refuses to report their story. The town's own sheriff (Christopher Heyerdahl) shies away from protecting them to prevent damage to his reelection campaign. Their fellow farmers who haven't joined their ranks sabotage them. Even worse, the banks send to town Creeley Turner (Logan Marshall-Green), a strikebreaker known for his ruthlessness. And Turner has an ace in his sleeve—he has a strong past connection with Davenport that the latter wouldn't want to acknowledge. "Damnation" also stars Sarah Jones as Amelia Davenport, Melinda Page Hamilton as Connie Dunn, Chasten Harmon as Bessie Louvin, and Joe Adler as DL Sullivan.

You won't find much hope in Damnation and that's an absence that can only exist unfilled for so long.

Modern relevance and a few good performances are all it has to recommend. It's too often dull, tonally inconsistent, and just poorly written. All the modern political parallels in the world won't matter if the viewer is bored.

The Great Depression's vicious class struggles, down to the dumbly surprising ubiquity of our country's white supremacist undercurrent, are leagues more compelling and relevant than any straight-up Western could possibly be right now.

Damnation is a gritty tale of the American labour movement, the economics of greed, the seduction of capitalism, a terrain of strikes, starvation and bloodied soil. It's Deadwood long after the goldrush and minus sweary Lovejoy.

Damnation's audience should be getting bigger and bigger each week, since this is a show that everyone should be watching.

It is great entertainment, and more fun than your history class homework.

Violence, racism, antiheroes in dark Depression-era drama.

The score created anticipation when needed and built bridges between the scenes. The cinematography was alternately sparse and visually sumptuous.

From my view, Damnation has a lot going for it. The political history of the United States is always worth discussing, and the series features an incredibly talented cast.

We had to keep reminding ourselves about the time period, which is never a good thing for a period show. But the performances are pretty good, and we liked the twist at the end that set up things for the rest of the season.
