I'm charmed. Dancing With the Stars is an improbable, goofy delight, more fun to watch than the bombastic American Idol for at least two reasons.
While mildly amusing, what the show lacks is charm. And humor. And tension.
Dancing With the Stars is a pleasantly lightweight addition to the summer retread schedule.
"Dancing With the Stars'" most hideous features are exactly those that pull us in deeper. It would be difficult to care about an actual star who could actually dance.
Everything looks tacky: the set, the costumes, the lighting, the script (one host actually says, "The tension mounts") and above all the dancing, with its tiresome emphasis on tricks over human contact, or the dancing illusion thereof.
This is the rare show that can be enjoyed and appreciated by all generations.
In the case of the relatively civilized "Dancing," you get the absorbing pleasure of watching celebrities try a demanding art form that could leave their toes blistered and their egos bruised.
